McKenzie Weegar Signs Eight Year Deal — Does a Trade Follow? (Flames)

Update: The Calgary Flames organization has confirmed that the deal has been signed. Barring a trade, Weegar is a Flame for the next nine seasons.

Per Elliotte Friedman, McKenzie Weegar and the Calgary Flames are closing in on a contract around the eight year, 50 million dollar marker. That’s a 6.25 million dollar annual average value.

Obviously, that is an excellent number to be bringing in a top two defenceman at. The industry comparable is Hampus Lindholm’s 8 year, 6.5 annual average value deal signed last season.

The 6’0… 210lb defenceman put up eight goals and 44 points on Florida’s first pairing last season. An eight year deal would keep him in Calgary until he is 37.

Now that Weegar is signed, what is the next domino to fall? The Flames have nine defencemen that can handle NHL minutes adequately. Ten if you include Jusso Valimaki. Could Brad Treliving have a trade for a right wing lined up?
