I couldn’t watch the game and am not thrilled. All updates are based on twitter and/or game center. The lack of our tv crew at the preseason games is a bit shocking.
In potential hockey news, Matt Shepard was fired today from his play by play gig by Bally. He’s done hockey in the past and may be a good booth partner for Daniels as at some point Redmond is going to move to his new place and may take some time off. Shep loves the game and has called it at the collegiate and pro level. Years ago I used to listed to he and Doug Todd on “shep in the morning…. I loved the show. I even dropped off some breakfast burritos for the crew.
I think the reality of change is starting to set in on the production side. In the comments, is there a former player (not currently on staff) that you think would do well in the play by play or color commentary? This really feels like a new chapter and we may be saying goodbye to some people who we’ve loved sharing this game with.
As far as the game itself, the numbers seem to bear out that Toronto was getting the better of Detroit in nearly every category. Even outhitting the Wings squad. 3 straight games is a lot to digest, and each has had at least a moment or two of positivity. Full marks to Toronto for giving the fans a fun win. If there is someone you think pushed themselves up the chart so far in the pre season let me know in the comments. I look forward to the season’s start and I am asking Santa for a jersey this year. Would really like a signed Seider Jersey but unless you can catch the player (and you NEVER ask for an autograph if you get a pass to go in and cover something) the eBay price is a bit rough.
Thanks for hanging in for this one, have a safe and (hopefully) dry Friday. It’s been pouring out here in Oakland county.
First Period (got a late start)
At the 7 minute mark the game is tied 1-1 as Nylander scored for Toronto and Danielson for Detroit. What an arena to get your first (even though it’s a preseason game)
Looks like Detroit is heading to the power play 11:09. They made quick work of it as Gostisbehere got the puck to Berggren and a quick shot gave Detroit a 2-1 lead. Hirose w/ 2nd assist. Just 6 seconds into power play
With 8 seconds left Matthews tied it up at 2 apiece. The fact it’s even tied is impressive. Score: 2-2 Shots: 12-11 TOR
Second Period:
At 8:12 former (and missed) Red Wing Tyler Bertuzzi grabbed a one goal lead for Toronto.
With just 1:35 left in the first Shine tied it back up with an apple for JV who rushed in and intercepted the puck from a goalie clear behind the net, handing it off to Shine who had a wide open target.
Score: 3-3 Shots: 24-20 TOR
3rd Period.
No scoring, but Toronto outshot Detroit. Kudos to the Detroit crew for getting to OT, Lyon should get a free dinner off of this one. Shots were 13-3 Toronto. That’s a goalie doing you a solid.
Score: 3-3 Shots: 37-23
OT Just 1:34 into the extra frame Nylander scored his second and ended the game. An Overtime loss feels like a solid result for the crew that was sent, though it looks (on the numbers at least) that Lyon may have gifted what would be a consolation point during the regular season.
Score 4-3 TOR Shots 38-23 TOR
