Looking to get back on track (Avalanche)

The Avalanche play Dallas on Friday at the Pepsi Center to close out a three-game homestand.

One lineup change: Ryan Graves replaces Mark Barberio on defense. Nikita Zadorov will play after taking a maintenance day Thursday.

"It's a four-point game and we're pretty excited to get it going," Cale Makar said of the Central Division matchup.

Makar, who turned 21 Wednesday, has four points (one goal, three assists) in the past five games. His nine assists in October set a Colorado record for a rookie defenseman in a single month.

The Avalanche are coming off a 4-3 overtime loss to Florida in which they blew a 3-1 lead in the third period. After a 7-0-1 start, they've gone 1-2-1 in the past four games.

"You learn from our mistakes," Makar said. "I think it's all behind us. I don't think we've played too differently. I mean, maybe just a few slow starts and some pretty big slip-ups in areas, but it's just (a matter of) remaining consistent all game."

Nathan MacKinnon has 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists) in the first 12 games, tying Joe Sakic (1988-89) for the fourth-longest streak from the start of a season in Colorado/Quebec Nordiques history.

If MacKinnon gets a point Friday, he would have the longest season-opening streak in the NHL since Detroit's Henrik Zetterberg had a 17-game streak Oct. 3-Nov. 11, 2007. Zetterberg had 27 points (13 goals, 14 assists).

The Stars have gone 4-1-0 after a 1-7-1 start. Anton Khudobin is expected to start in goal. He made 11 saves Tuesday in relief of Ben Bishop in a 6-3 win against Minnesota.
