The Toronto Maple Leafs will be opening training camp later this month and one of the areas where there is expected to be competition for a roster spot is fourth line center. The club has players like Calle Jarnkrok, Sam Lafferty and Max Domi capable of playing up the middle, but they are all expected to start the season on the wing in the top nine.

With Auston Matthews, John Tavares, and David Kampf playing up the middle, the battle for fourth line center was expected to pit sophomore Pontus Holmberg against free agent addition Dylan Gambrell, but a new player may have entered the picture in 25-year-old Noah Gregor.

The former San Jose Shark agreed to a professional tryout with the Leafs on Wednesday after spending parts of four seasons in Northern California and scoring 10 goals in 57 games last season. Gregor can also play wing, giving him a shot at making the NHL roster as a versatile 13th forward if Toronto signs him to an NHL deal after camp, but he could also be signed on an AHL deal to keep the number of pro contracts at 47.
