The New York Islanders were shut out by the Arizona Coyotes at home last night, losing 2-0.

Arizona took over a bit in the second period, with some power play opportunities and odd-man rush chances, which Ilya Sorokin had to be good on. The Islanders only managed three shots in the entire frame but got to the intermission without falling behind.
The Coyotes opened the scoring on a power play only a minute into the third period though, with Travis Boyd tapping in a nice pass from Clayton Keller. The Islanders tried to press as the period went along and did have some chances but Arizona held on, with Jack McBain scoring an empty netter in the final minute to seal the deal.
It’s a disappointing loss for the Islanders but also somewhat on brand with how they’ve been playing through the first half of most games. New York hasn’t really got much going offensively in the first 40 minutes of most of their recent games and only managed 13 shots through the first two periods last night.
The difference was this time, they couldn’t recover in the third period. They only managed 24 shots against a pretty weak team (even despite Arizona’s surprisingly decent start to the year).
The power play went 0-for-3 and is ranked 25th in the league right now as well, which doesn’t help. Putting together full 60-minute efforts will be the key going forward and as we can see, waiting until the third period to get going offensively doesn’t always work out.
The Islanders will be back in action tomorrow, when they face the Columbus Blue Jackets.
