I’ve written often about Samuel Monteambeault’s limitations, but tonight he was red hot. While lady luck might have been on his side in the first frame, the rest of his game was pure skill, and he finished his night with 42 saves and a .955 save percentage. The young netminder was especially impressive in the 2nd period when his team was purely and simply overwhelmed, but he held his ground after allowing the game-tying goal and allow the Habs to stay in this game.

Up front, the newly formed line of Anderson-Dvorak-Gallagher had its working boots on and applied pressure all night long. Gallagher scored the first goal after his shot was stopped by Comrie but then bounced of Power to end in the net. That same line would also score the game-winning goal after an impressive shift in which they were denied in extremis but didn’t take no for an answer and finally scored.

Meanwhile, Kaiden Guhle joined the 1st career goal club tonight with a bullet from in close on a David Savard assist. It was only fitting that the vet who spends so much time on the ice with the youngster be the architect of his first career goal.

Once again tonight, there were a lot of chances of the rush for the Canadiens, even on the penalty kill. Monahan and Suzuki very nearly converted on a 2 on 1, but the former was robbed by the post. Everything wasn’t honky dory though; the power play was once more unable to score and there’s a reason for that. Much like when Shea Weber was its main weapon, the man-advantage is insanely predictable. Every team knows that the Habs are trying to set-up Cole Caufield and that’s where they focus their energy. As much as I like Caufield, he hasn’t got an Ovie like shot and he doesn’t convert at the same rate.
At the risk of beating a dead horse, I’ve seen more than enough of Mike Hoffman. At one stage in the second frame, there was no pressure whatsoever on number 68 in the offensive zone and he sent a pass to absolutely no one straight in the slot. He then back checked and got himself a crosschecking penalty, how’s that for a single shift? Need more evidence? On the power play he was at the blue line, under pressure and spun around to send a soft pass towards Nick Suzuki near the boards, shockingly enough, the Sabres didn’t just wait for the puck to get to the captain and pounced.
I understand wanting to showcase Hoffman in the hope of being able to move him, but I strongly object to putting him as an hinderance to two productive elements. Besides, you don’t attract flies with vinegar and GMs won’t come knocking for him. François Gagnon replied to me that you might attract fruit flies with vinegar though and that’s the thing, you don’t need to attract fruit flies with Hoffman, there’s all around him already because he’s way too ripe…
In the end though, the overall performance was good enough to get the win, even though the Sabres will no doubt feel robbed tonight.

Oui, dame chance était de son côté en première période, mais le reste de sa soirée a été parsemé d’arrêts de qualité et il a terminé sa soirée avec 42 arrêts et un pourcentage d’efficacité de .955. Le jeune gardien a été particulièrement impressionnant en 2e alors que son équipe semblait purement et simplement débordé, mais il a tenu son bout après avoir accordé le but égalisateur et il est parvenu à garder son équipe dans le match.

à l’avant, la ligne nouvellement formée d’Anderson-Dvorak-Gallagher avait mis ses bottes de travail et a mis de la pression toute la soirée. Gallagher a marqué le premier but du match quand son tir a été arrêté par Comrie mais a rebondi sur Power pour trouver le fond du filet. Cette même ligne est également allée chercher le but gagnant en 3e période pendant une présence impressionnante ou Comrie les a arrêtés in extremis avant d’être déjoué quelques secondes plus tard par un tir de loin d’Anderson.

à la ligne bleue, Kaiden Guhle a également rejoint le club du premier but en carrière avec un puissant tir à courte distance, gracieuseté d’une belle passe de David Savard. Ce n’était que justice que le vétéran soit l’architecte de son premier but, lui qui passe tellement de temps avec lui sur la surface glacée.

Une fois de plus ce soir, il y a eu plusieurs chances en contre-attaque pour le CH, même en désavantage numérique. Monahan et Suzuki on faille marquer sur un deux contre un, mais le premier a été frustré par le poteau. Tout n’était pas parfait cependant, encore une fois, l’avantage numérique a été tenue n échec et il y a une raison pour ça. Tout comme dans le temps ou Shea Weber était l’arme de prédilection, le jeu de puissance est beaucoup trop prévisible. Toutes les équipes savent que le Tricolore cherche à alimenter Caufield pour le lancer et c’est là qu’elles concentrent leur énergie. J’adore Caufield, mais il n’a pas un lancer à la Ovechkin qui va rentrer à tous les coups sur l’avantage numérique si attendu soit-il.
Au risque de m’acharner, j’en ai plus qu’assez de Mike Hoffman. à un certain moment en 2e, il n’y avait absolument aucune pression sur lui en zone offensive et il a fait une passe à personne dans l’enclave. Il s’est ensuite replié pour aller se mériter une punition pour double échec en zone défensive, tout cela sur la même présence. Vous avez besoin de plus de preuves? Sur l’avantage numérique, il était sous pression à la ligne bleue et y est allé d’un tourniquet pour envoyer mollement la rondelle à Nick Suzuki près de la bande, étonnement, les joueurs des Sabres ne sont pas restés immobile à attendre que le capitaine reçoive la passe et s’en sont emparé.
Je comprends qu’on veuille le mettre en vitrine pour l’échanger, mais pas au prix de mettre un boulet à tes deux éléments les plus productifs. De plus, on attire par les mouches avec du vinaigre, François Gagnon a répondu à mon tweet à cet effet en disant qu’on pouvait peut-être attirer des mouches à fruits en revanche, mais il est dans l’erreur, des mouches à fruits il y en a des tonnes parce qu’Hoffman est mur, plus que mur en fait, mais je vais rester polie.
Finalement, la performance d’ensemble a été suffisante pour aller chercher les deux points, même si les Sabres ont sans doute le sentiment d’avoir été volé…
