Game 21: NYR 6 MTL 5, from Woe Canada to Oh Canada, Rangers rally for win (lemieux)

The Rangers rallied from 4-0 and 5-3 deficits to defeat the Canadiens on Saturday. New York went from looking at Woe Canada with two massive poor performances to Oh Canada and a thrilling 6-5 win in their house of horrors. Several players stood out in the win, rallying the Blueshirts to a win that looked as likely as man walking on the moon in the 1950s. Instead of coming home off a two-game losing streak, New York could fly home without a plane after the win.

Game recap:

A great quote from David Quinn after the win:

A few thoughts:

1) The defensive pairings switch didn't look great early on, as New York fell behind 4-0. But Skjei/Trouba and Lindgren/Fox really stepped up their games. Those two duos were excellent the latter half-plus of the contest. Lindgren was beast, playing a very physical contest while Skjei finally got out of his own head, using his talent rather than letting negative events impact him adversely. If Skjei uses his talent, especially his skating ability, he and Trouba could be an effective pair.

2) Filip Chytil started the comeback with a beautiful goal. The Rangers flipped the switch, driving hard to the net. Pavel Buchnevich tallied, thanks to driving to the crease. The same with Brendan Lemieux, whose dad was in the crowd.

3) Lemieux was monster. Hard to the net, Tremendous on the penalty kill, getting the shorthanded marker. Took the contact and gave it out as well as he got. Look at his eye and also his comment after the game. New Yorkers love a player who wears his heart on his sleeve and gives 100% on every shift, willing to take the punishment and come back for more. Just missed a hat trick late in the game when his shot at an empty net trickled wide.

4) Chris Kreider was a monster. I wish he would shoot more, seen when he dropped the puck to Artemi Panarin rather than going hard to the net. But holy wow, was he great. When Montreal went up 5-3, a great shift by Ryan Strome, Kreider and Panarin with Kreider doing the dirty work and then making a brilliant between the legs pass for the Panarin marker. Then after Lemieux tied the game with a shortie, Kreider was in front of Carey Price and may have tipped in Trouba's shot.

5) Special teams - the penalty kill, after giving up 10 goals in four games, went 4-for-4, scoring a shorthanded goal. The power play was not great. No movement, or at least not enough of it, both player but especially puck. Too much looking for the perfect pass, not enough shots on net. A wasted 5-on-3. Changes need to be made, maybe personnel or style.

6) Great quote by Strome, he gets it:
