As feared, there is still no timetable for Joel Edmundson’s return, he’s making progress and skated this morning but that’s all we know so far. As for Joel Armia, he’ll be out for 1 to 2 weeks throwing a spanner in the works as Martin St-Louis tries to work out his opening night line-up. Unfortunately, Emil Heineman sustained a thumb injury that will keep him on the sidelines for 6 weeks, the silver lining, if you want to see it, is that it should defer his return to overseas and give the Habs more time to work out a way to keep him on this side of the pond. Meanwhile Mike Matheson has got a lower body injury and his considered day-to-day. In the good news category, Nick Suzuki, Christian Dvorak and Mike Hoffman will all be back on this ice for today’s practice.
After waiving Corey Schueneman and Madison Bowey yesterday, the Habs announced this morning that Justin Barron, Rafael Harvey-Pinard, Otto Leskinen, Cayden Primeau and Jesse Ylonen had all been assigned to Laval. In other works, Kayden Guhle, Jordan Harris, Arber Xhekaj and Juraj Slafkovsky are all staying with the big club to start with at least. The injuries to Edmundson and Matheson are no doubt the reason why Harris and Xhekaj are staying up for now, once the veterans are ready to come back, I expect Harris to go down to Laval first, followed by Xhekaj in due course. Although, Edmundson’s situation is starting to look eerily like last season and one can wonder if the absence won’t end up being long-term. However, there still a possibility that another waiver pick-up or a trade could bring in some veteran help on D and send one of the rookies down.
In net, it is far from shocking to see Primeau head back to Laval, he’s clearly not ready and he certainly wouldn’t benefit from playing behind an insanely young blue line which will include 3 rookies. As harsh as it sounds, the team prefers to sacrifice Samuel Montembeault than Cayden Primeau who they still believe have the higher ceiling. Waiver pick-up Jonathan Kovacevic has now reported to the team and will be wearing number 26, which was left vacant with Jeff Petry’s departure.

And yes, you're seeing that right, Drouin is not in the line-up, looks like St-Louis and co. Won’t have the same patience the previous regime had. For now Drouin was alternating with Hoffman at this morning’s practice, but if the game had been tonight, he would have been an healthy scratch alongside Pezzetta. Speaking to the media, Drouin said that he is 100% healthy, that it’s not his decision but that he respects it. Perhaps time is running out…
Comme on commençait à le craindre, il n’y a toujours pas d’échéancier quant à la date de retour possible de Joel Edmundson, il progresse et a patiné ce matin, mais c’est tout ce que l’on sait ce matin. Quant à Joel Armia, il ratera de 1 à 2 semaines d’activités, ce qui compliquera la tâche de Martin St-Louis alors qu’il tente de s’arrêter sur une formation de départ pour le match d’ouverture. Malheureusement, Emil Heineman a subi une blessure au pouce qui le verra rester sur la touche pour 6 semaines, le bon côté, si on veut en trouver un, est que cela devrait retarder son retour en Europe et que cela donnera du temps à l’état-major pour trouver une façon de le garder de ce côté de l’océan. Mike Matheson quant à lui souffre d’une blessure au bas du corps et est réévalué quotidiennement. Dans la catégorie bonne nouvelle, Nick Suzuki, Christian Dvorak et Mike Hoffman sont tous de retour à l’entraînement ce matin.

En d’autres mots, Kaiden Guhle, Jordan Harris, Arber Xhekaj et Juraj Slafkovsky restent tous avec le grand club, du moins pour le moment. Les blessures à Edmundson et Matheson sont sans aucun doute la raison pour laquelle Harris et Xhekaj obtiennent un sursis, quand les vétérans seront de retour, je m’attends à voir Harris d’abord et Xhekaj ensuite être rétrogradés. Quoique la situation d’Edmundson commence à ressembler drôlement à celle de l’année dernière et c’est à se demander si cela ne sera pas à long terme. Cependant, il demeure possible qu’un échange ou une autre acquisition au ballotage viennent changer les plans et envoyer une recrue avec le club école.
Devant le filet, c’est loin d’être surprenant de voir Primeau retourner dans les mineurs, il n’est pas prêt et ce ne serait pas bénéfique pour lui de devoir garder le fort devant une brigade défensive qui inclura vraisemblablement 3 recrues. Bien que ça puisse sembler cruel de le dire ainsi, l’équipe préfère nettement sacrifier Montembeault que Cayden Primeau, qu’il voit toujours comme l’option avec le plus grand potentiel. Quant à la nouvelle acquisition au ballotage Jonathan Kovasevic, il portera le numéro 26 que le départ de Jeff Petry a laissé vacant.

Pour l’instant Drouin n’est pas dans l’alignement. On dirait que St-Louis et compagnie n’auront pas la patience avec lui qu’avait l’ancien régime. à l’entraînement, il alternait avec Hoffman sur un trio, mais si le match était ce soir, il ne serait pas de formation, tout comme Michael Pezzetta. Parlant aux médias après l’entraînement, Drouin s’est dit 100% en santé, ajoutant que ce n’était pas sa décision mais qu’il la respectait…est-ce que ce pourrait être le debut de la fin pour lui à Montréal?
