I have a source who has been telling me that the San Jose Sharks and Evander Kane have had substantive discussions regarding a contract extension to stay and play in the city by The Bay.

According to a report, Kane and the Sharks have agreed to a seven-year, $49 million contract extension. The contract is one of the largest in Sharks franchise history.

Kane will turn 27 in August and was due to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Kane's current 6-year, $31.5 million contract is expiring. Kane was a $5.25M AAV this season.

At the time of his trade to San Jose from Buffalo, Kane had scored 20G, with the Sabres. Kane finished the regular season with 29G,25A. Kane scored 4 goals and an assist in his first 9 playoff games.

The Sharks compiled a 12-6-1 after Kane arrived In San Jose on February 26.

Kane's fire brand style made him an immediate fan favorite in San Jose, where veteran Joe Thornton missed the final four months of the regular season plus playoffs due to serious injuries. Couple Thornton's loss with Patrick Marleau's departure to Toronto last summer, and the Sharks were desperate to add scoring and speed to their veteran core at the NHL trade deadline. When asked about Kane’s audition with the Sharks on locker cleanout day, team leaders Logan Couture, Joe Pavelski and Brent Burns spoke glowingly of Kane. To a man, the Sharks players let it be known that they were in favor of Kane staying in San Jose on a long term contract.

“We (the Sharks players) want him back. He’s fit in well,… Couture said empahtaically on Sharks break up day. “You don’t listen to what people said about him before. Just getting to know him over these past few months, he’s a great teammate, he cares, he wants to win. He was fun to play with.…

Kane revealed his true character to his GM, coaches, teammates, and fans by playing through two brutal injuries. Kane admitted on break up day (May 8) he suffered a shoulder separation against Vegas on March 31, well before the playoffs began. Kane also played on an medial collateral ligament strain that he suffered in early April. The MCL injury forced Kane to miss a few games down the stretch. Kane never used the injuries as an excuse. He put his head down and played right through the pain.

Kane landed in San Jose on February 26. The Buffalo Sabres received a conditional 2019 first-round pick from Doug Wilson, general manager of the Sharks. The stipulation in the deal was that if/when Kane were to re-sign a contract to remain in teal and black, or the Sharks won Lord Stanley's Cup this season, the Sabres would receive San Jose's 2019 first-round draft choice. The Sharks were knocked out of their second round series by the Golden Misfits from Sin City.

Assuming the report is valid (and I've been told that it is), the Sabres will now own a first-round pick from San Jose in 2019. The Sabres will have their own first rounder in 2019 as well.

Who says the Buffalo Sabres cannot have nice things?

After finishing 31st overall in the NHL standing in 2017-18, Sabres GM Jason Botterill won the NHL Draft Lottery in Toronto on April 28. Botterill will be cashing in the winning lottery ticket at the NHL Draft in Dallas next month. Swedish rockstar defenseman Rasmus Dahlin will be Botterill's selection.

Last week, the Sabres signed free agent defenseman Lawrence Pilut from HV71 of theSwedish Eite League.

Now, Botterill has converted Evander Kane into a 2019 first round pick, forward prospect Danny O'Regan, and a conditional fourth rounder.

Stick tap, Botterill.
