Detroit starts West Coast swing in Anaheim - pregame (Red Wings)

It seems to be the perfect time for a team road trip. With 2 important wins in the past 2 games, Detroit players are feeling positive and confident. That can only help the bonding process as the players head to California. Newcomers Robby Fabbri and Brendan Perlini will have the chance to get to know their new teammates better. The leadership group will have a chance to organize some activities. These stretches away from home ice can do a lot for team chemistry.

Detroit’s last game against Anaheim saw a team frustrated by outstanding goal tending. Gibson made 31 saves on 32 shots and the Duck’s capitalized with a 3-1 win. Anaheim, of late, has had a few struggles. They’ve now lost three straight contests and will look to right the ship on home ice. The Duck’s power play sits at 30th with an 8.5% effective rate. The PK is much more respectable at 80%(18th in the league) for a special teams total of 88.5%. This is the first game in a while that Detroit is facing an opponent well below the Scotty Bowman recommended 100% combined.

Detroit is headed in a positive direction after wins against Vegas and Boston. The power play is inching its way up to 16.1% (22nd) but the PK is still a league worst 68.3% for a total special teams number of 84.4%. The good news is that the Red Wings have 3 PP goals in those 2 wins while only giving up 1 on the PK. Trending positive.

Givani Smith was called up from Grand Rapids for the trip as Abdelkader will be out at least 3 weeks with an injury. Smith brings a different element that had a positive impact in his last appearance. His physical play can wear down the defense. His line can keep the opposition pinned down defending their own net. Once the players begin to change, a fresh off the bench Mantha, Larkin and Bertuzzi will find an opportunity. 4th line efforts don’t always show up on the score sheet, but they can still lead to goals.

Fabbri’s start in Detroit has been very good for a player looking to reestablish his game. 2PP goals and 1 assist in 2 games. He looks very comfortable in his new position. It would be a great boost to Perlini to be able to get on the board on this trip. The former AZ first rounder has started to look more and more comfortable on his new team. McIlrath has also been a breath of fresh air for the team. His ability to clear the crease during a PK has been sorely needed.

Winning is the healing balm of sport. The more success this young team can attain, the more it will help build up the young players. The opportunity in California this week is a unique one. The three west coast teams all seem to have some issues unique to the respective clubs. Detroit has the ability to bank more points and build team rapport for the next week. With a strong effort and solid goal tending, the team could find some more success. That, in the end, is what this core wants to achieve.
