The Vancouver Canucks finally solved their woes against the New Jersey Devils.
The Devils got beaten on the road 6-3 to the Canucks as fans chanted “Bruce, there it is….… each time the home team scored a goal. After getting his eighth straight start, Devils rookie goaltender Nico Daws was pulled from the game after letting up the fourth goal. Jon Gillies came in and the Devils did close the gap to make it 4-3. But, Gillies gave up two goals to Bo Horvat and Juho Lammikko to seal the deal for Vancouver.
“Today, you’ve got to be honest with yourself and say they were better than us,… Jesper Bratt said.
The Devils will have to shake off this loss and will face a very good Calgary Flames team tonight in Calgary.
Woo Thoughts
1. Jack Hughes’ shoot first mentality is getting results. At times last night, he was skating past the Canucks players and kept shooting the puck. There were several sequences that Hughes just dominated and his line mates were left wide open. Hughes ended up with one goal and one assist.
2. Pulling Daws? I thought it was too premature that Lindy Ruff pulled Nico Daws. I understand he is a rookie goaltender and the team will be playing on back-to-back nights. But Daws has the ability to fight through these situations early in his career. Matter of fact, he did so when the Devils were down 3-0 against the Colorado Avalanche before the Devils scored five unanswered goals to win the game.
Did Ruff make the wrong move here?
3. The Devils should never have traded for Cory Schneider back in 2013. Not saying that Bo Horvat would have been drafted but he looked fantastic last night and a true leader of the Canucks. To his credit, Schneider did go on to have a few pretty good years with the Devils but only had one playoff win. Turns out, it was the only playoff win since Game 5 of the 2012 Stanley Cup finals. If I was the Devils GM, I would have let Martin Brodeur play out the rest of his career as the top goalie and it may have bettered the team’s chances in lottery picks in 2015 and 2016 where Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews were the top picks respectively.
Mason Geertsen’s grandma knows best!
I think jet lag, the devils didn’t have the jump they usually have!
