Summary:
Reimer should probably be getting his dinner paid for after this one. Calgary outshot the Wings 38-21 but Detroit had 2 good power plays, an aggressive attack, and Raymond’s tally to finish it off was like a skating tour of the O zone. A big 5 on 3 kill kept the momentum going as the Flames looked skyward at numbers that didn’t seem to mesh.
The Wings seemed off to a tepid start as Calgary was outshooting them 5-1 early on, but with around 5 minutes left Kane ripped a shot from the blue line for a power play tally and soon after Compher scored again. 2 goals on 7 shots in the first.
The second period continued in similar fashion. 2 more goals on 9 more shots (one power play and one even strength). Near the end of the third Raymond put the cherry on top for a 5-0 shutout as Reimer faced down 38 shots while Detroit scored 5 times on 21. We’ve seen the team be on both sides of that odd math.
Calgary has the look of a team hungry to shut down the haters but a little shaken up with all of the trade speculation. It never really hit me how this type of scenario hits players until a friend of ours was rumored to be going to a team out east. We got ahold of our friends right away and it ended up just being that “filler… of the talking heads when nothing is really happening.
Unfortunately, at first there was a little panic. “What did you hear?… We named the team there was a brief pause and everyone calmed down. Especially at the TDL, kids want to finish the school year so if a player is traded they are probably either hotel bound or crashing in someone’s guest room. The humanity of the scenario wasn’t something we’d really thought about.
At this point Florida is up on TB 6-1 going into the third and the old NASCAR “If you ain’t rubbing you ain’t racin’… is in full effect in the Atlantic. This could be a rough 29 game stretch.
Interestingly, no one really jumped off the page as an upgrade. Kadri still sells penalties to the cheap seats, there was plenty of growl but it seemed disjointed. A scrum would break out and then dissipate just as quickly. For where Detroit is in terms of age and development, this may not be a pond where Yzerman makes many casts.
The best part of this road trip even in a 1-2-0 record has been Kane. He just keeps making plays and is awfully close to Modano for U.S. Born assists. He still shows those glimpses of a player who won’t wait long for his ring when he hangs up the skates.
Let me know your thoughts. Does Seattle concern you? Can Detroit skate away with 4 of 8 and keep the battle going in the East for post season positioning? We’ll find out soon.
