The Canadiens drew first blood tonight when Kotkaniemi managed to get the puck by Jack Campbell on a second rebound. He celebrated by pointing to the “locker-room… room, the guys with whom he had been practicing without playing. Unfortunately, it would be the only time the Leafs goaltender would be beaten. 4 minutes later, the Leafs levelled the score before taking the lead early in the 2nd and never losing it.

There are many ways to explain this defeat, first and foremost, the Leafs worked hard for the whole game and the Habs didn’t. With so much firepower, Toronto easily won, Matthews had himself a night with 3 points while Marner had 2. The Canadiens cannot afford that kind of lack of effort.
Speaking of lack, there was also an obvious lack of discipline tonight and that caused not only the Habs’ downfall, but also the awakening of Toronto’s power play which could come back to haunt Montreal later down the line. Even the captain was guilty of bad judgement and retaliated with a cross-check after having been put down with a big hit. Swallow your pride and keep playing instead of doing that.
While Montreal dominated in the face-off circle in the first game, tonight the Leafs won 66% of the duels. In fact, the only one with a winning percentage tonight was Jesperi Kotkaniemi at 54.5% on 11 face-offs. Danault only won 6 of his 21 draws (28.6%), Suzuki was even worse with 23.1% (on 13 FO) and Staal won 2 of his 6 for 33.3%. It’s hard to produce much when you must chase the puck continually.
Another issue tonight was the goal challenge, there was nothing there. It seemed quite obvious that Bergevin, from the heights of the arena, is the one who told his coach to challenge it, which he shouldn’t have done. If Carey Price didn’t see anything wrong with the play, there’s nothing wrong with it. At 3-1, the damage was done but the penalty that lead to the 4th goal was like an extra nail in the Canadiens’ coffin.
It was once again a tough night for Tomas Tatar who looked like he was skating in quicksand even on the power play, in 2 games, he’s done nothing. The Merrill-Weber pairing had difficulties as well, most of which were Merrill’s responsibility. Pinching when Matthews and Marner are on the ice, is not a good idea, especially when there is no forward in sight to cover for you. In the defensive zone, they didn’t read each other well and handed up losing the puck too often.
However, after 2 games, the series is tied at 1-1 and if Dominique Ducharme was serious about making changes when needed, well now’s the time. Kotkaniemi played well enough to stay in the line-up and with an anemic attack, you cannot afford to sit a guy who could score some big goals for you, no matter how small he is, make way for Caufield. Furthermore, I’ve seen enough of Merrill, time to put Romanov back in the line-up. Bring on game 3 at the Bell Centre with the last change!

Il a célébré en pointant vers le “locker-room 4…, les gars avec qui il a pratiqué depuis la dernière semaine sans jouer. Malheureusement, ça allait être la seule fois que le CH parviendrait à déjouer le gardien du Toronto. 4 minutes plus tard, les Leafs ont créé l’égalité avant de prendre l’avance tôt en 2e pour ne jamais la perdre.

Il y a plusieurs façons d’expliquer cette défaite, tout d’abord, les torontois ont travaillé fort toute la soirée ce qui ne fut pas le cas des Habs. Avec tellement d’armes à leur disposition, les Leafs l’ont facilement emporté, Matthews a connu une soirée de 3 points et Marner en a eu 2. Le CH ne peut tout simplement pas se permettre un tel manque d’effort.
Parlant de manque, il y a aussi eu un criant manque de discipline ce soir et ça a non-seulement causé la défaite mais également la résurrection du jeu de puissance de Toronto. Il y a de fortes chances que cela revienne hanté le Tricolore plus tard dans cette série. Même le capitaine a pêché par indiscipline en répliquant après s’être fait frapper durement et être tombé sur la glace. C’était de l’orgueil mal placé d’aller répliquer et le moment était vraiment mal choisi.
Alors que les montréalais avaient dominés au cercle des mises en jeu jeudi, les Leafs ont remporté 66% des duels ce soir. En fait, le seul centre du CH qui a eu une fiche gagnante ce soir fut Jesperi Kotkaniemi avec 54.5% sur 11 duels. Danault en a seulement remporté 6 sur 21 (28.6%), Suzuki a fait encore pire avec 23.1% (sur 13 duels) et Staal n’en a gagné que 2 de ses 6 (33%). C’est difficile de générer quoique ce soit à l’attaque quand tu n’as jamais la rondelle.
Un autre problème ce soir a été la décision de contester le 3e but des Leafs, il n’y avait absolument rien là . à‡a semblait évident que des hauteurs de l’aréna, c’est Bergevin qui a dit à son entraîneur de contester le but et il n’aurait tout simplement pas dà». Si Carey Price n’a rien vu de problématique avec le jeu, il n’y avait pas de problème avec le jeu. à 3-1, le dommage était déjà fait, mais la pénalité qui a mené au 4e but a été un clou supplémentaire dans le cercueil de la Sainte-Flanelle.
Une fois de plus, Tomas Tatar a connu une soirée difficile, même sur le jeu de puissance, il semblait patiner dans des sables mouvants, en 2 matchs, il a été invisible. La paire Merrill-Weber a également connue des difficultés, la plupart étant la responsabilité de Merrill. S’avancer pour joindre l’attaque quand Matthews et Marner sont sur le jeu et qu’aucun avant ne peut te couvrir, ce n’est pas une bonne idée. Dans leur zone, les deux coéquipiers avaient de la misère à communiquer et ont fini par perdre la rondelle trop souvent.
Toutefois, après 2 matchs, la série est à égalité et si Ducharme était sérieux à propos de faire des changements quand besoin il y aurait, le temps est venu. Kotkaniemi a joué assez bien pour mériter de rester dans l’alignement et avec une attaque anémique, tu ne peux tout simplement pas te permettre de ne pas utiliser un joueur qui pourrait te donner de gros buts, si petit soit-il, faites de la place à Caufield. De plus, j’ai assez vu Merrill, ramener Romanov dans l’alignement me semble tout indiqué. On met le cap sur le Centre Bell et un match numéro 3 avec le dernier changement!
