Canucks: Does a Milan Lucic Signing Make Sense?

During an interview with Donnie & Dhali, longtime NHL forward Milan Lucic was asked if he would consider signing the Vancouver Canucks. In response, the 35-year-old noted that "it's always a dream for a hometown boy to play for his hometown team, so I definitely would listen to what they'd have to say if they came calling."

Perhaps this may be a surprise to some, as Lucic memorably had this to say to reporters after an incident at a Vancouver bar back in 2013: "I have no reason left to try and defend my city, and the people of my city. Other than being at Rogers Arena, no one will ever see me in downtown Vancouver again."

Lucic was obviously angry, but it has also been an entire decade since those comments. People's feelings naturally can change as time passes, but can Canucks fans truly accept him with open arms if he does in fact come home and sign a deal with the club?

Ignoring this infamous moment, in terms of a fit, does a Lucic signing make sense? Although he is no longer the top-six power forward he was many moons ago, his toughness and grit are still effective in a limited role. As a result, there could be an argument to be had to add him as a fourth-line or even 13th forward at a low cap hit.

However, at the same time, the Canucks have multiple NHL-caliber wingers heading into next season, at least at the time of this writing. Nils Hoglander, a 22-year-old left winger, is also going to fight to earn an NHL spot again next season. The Canucks also have a physical winger in Dakota Joshua (222 hits in 79 games), who already provides plenty of grit and produces a bit offensively in the process

At the end of the day, a Lucic signing is something that would be interesting to see occur. It would not come with any risk, but at the same time, I don't believe it should be one of the Canucks' primary objectives this summer.
