The Physical Toll of Chris Tanev’s Defensive Style
Chris Tanev is as tough as they come in the NHL. He is the true embodiment of what it means to put your body on the line every single night for the crest on the front of the jersey. Unfortunately, that fearless style of play carries a heavy price, and when the tab finally comes due, it is usually a hefty one.
While Tanev has already missed time this season due to three separate incidents, it appears the most recent, and perhaps the most innocuous-looking play, might be the one to end his campaign. After battling through head and neck injuries earlier this year, a groin injury now appears to be the final straw.
Surgery Looming for the Leafs Veteran
According to David Pagnotta, Tanev is set to meet with a surgeon this week to review his options.
Some tough #LeafsForever news: Chris Tanev's regular-season may be over. Per sources, Tanev is meeting with a surgeon in the coming week to determine next steps. If they move forward with surgery, he is expected to be out until late-April/early-May.

Should Tanev opt for the surgical route, the recovery timeline would keep the veteran defender out of action until at least late April or early May. This development could force management's hand, prompting the Leafs to place Tanev on Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) to utilize his cap hit for reinforcements at the Trade Deadline.
Implications for the Maple Leafs' Blue Line
When Tanev signed his six-year deal with Toronto, many skeptics questioned whether he could play out the duration of the contract. However, few expected him to face such a significant crossroads just over a year into the deal. For the Maple Leafs, this news complicates their long-term defensive structure and leaves a massive void on the right side.
The big question now is how Brad Treliving pivots. Are the Maple Leafs still considering being aggressive buyers at the deadline? Does a name like Brandon Carlo become an even higher priority given the new hole on the right side? Only time will tell, but until then, our thoughts are with Tanev as he navigates this difficult chapter of his season.
