Was Sending Emil Andrae Down the Right Call? (nhl news)

The Flyers are coming off a win, but their latest roster move left fans scratching their heads. Just a day after being called up and delivering a solid effort in a 5–2 victory, Emil Andrae was sent back to Lehigh Valley to make room for Cam York, who was activated from injured reserve.

It’s not a shocking move York is a key part of the Flyers blue line and one of their long-term building blocks but the timing is interesting. Andrae played a poised, confident game against Florida, moving the puck well and showing improvement in his defensive reads. He looked calm under pressure and made smart decisions in limited minutes exactly the kind of showing a young defenseman needs to stick around.

Head coach Rick Tocchet said after Monday’s game that he liked Andrae’s performance, noting the young defenseman looked comfortable and confident, especially after starting the season in Lehigh Valley.

Despite that, they still sent him down.

The Flyers have been clear about their emphasis on patience and development, but this decision feels like one that could frustrate fans and maybe the player himself. Andrae did everything you could ask in his brief opportunity, helping the team secure a win, only to be immediately reassigned. It wasn’t about performance; it was about roster math.

After Monday’s practice, Andrae spoke about the disappointment of not making the Flyers roster out of training camp.

"Of course I was disappointed to get sent down, I didn't play well enough to make the roster," Andrae said Monday after the morning skate. "I just had the mindset to get back here. Go down to Lehigh, even if it takes one game or two months, I want to get back here. It's my goal. Now I've got an opportunity and I've got to take it."

It was an honest moment from a young player who’s shown maturity beyond his age. You could sense the frustration, but also the determination. Still, sending him down again makes sense when you look at the full picture. At 5-foot-9, 190 pounds, Andrae isn’t the biggest defenseman, and the Flyers want to keep him healthy and confident while he adjusts to the North American game. The AHL gives him the space to develop without being exposed to the nightly grind of NHL forechecks and heavy minutes against top competition.

It’s not about punishment, it's about preservation. The organization sees him as a long-term piece of their blue line, and giving him the chance to build strength and consistency in Lehigh Valley is part of that plan.

This move wasn’t really about how Andrae played; it came down to roster mechanics. With Cam York returning, the Flyers had to clear a spot. Anyone else they tried to send down would’ve had to pass through waivers, except for Matvei Michkov and Egor Grebenkin. Andrae was the simplest option to move without risking losing another player for nothing.

Still, it’s a bit puzzling. Egor Zamula hasn’t exactly played his way into a guaranteed spot, and it’s hard to see another team claiming him off waivers right now. But the Flyers chose to protect depth and flexibility even if it meant sending down a young defenseman who looked steady and earned another look.

In the end, this feels like a short-term move, not a setback. Andrae showed he can handle the pace and make smart plays under pressure, and the organization knows what they have in him. York’s return gives the Flyers a more stable blue line for now, but Andrae’s performance made one thing clear he’s not far off from being ready full-time.

The Flyers will be back on home ice tonight, looking to build on Monday’s win and prove that their defensive adjustments are starting to take hold. If they stay committed to development and patience, Andrae’s time will come soon enough.

Do you think the Flyers made the right call sending Andrae back to Lehigh Valley or did he earn a longer look in Philly?
