Kane does it again- makes smart people act stupid.
That's the outcry in Winnipeg and affar now as once again the media, including TSN Sportscentre, has to chime in on a picture of Evander Kane from his intagram account. This time it's of him doing pushups with stacks of money on his back whilst a view of Vegas is seen. The horror!
It's fun, it's funny and it's not a big deal. I get that Kane like to be flashy and maybe it rubs some people the wrong way but is it newsworthy? Is it really that important? Does it even matter?
Some would suggest that the public's abitlity to tolerate an image like that would be easier if Kane was scoring more goals. Ahhh so scoring goals buys more privilege? iIf something is offensive to you it should not come under condition it is or isn't regardless of what a person is or isn't doing. In this case it's a photo.
Last time I checked the internet was full of photos far more offensive and newsworthy than Evander Kanes personal wealth display. Perhaps the 'outrage hoobyists' as Greg Wyshynski referred to them as yesterday can find something worthy to be outrged about. It's not like Kane was offering the cash for his twitter followers to come do 'amateur photography' with him.
Today I tweeted out something as an experiment of sorts.
Who has better online 'game'?
RT for Kane and Fav for Pavelec pic.twitter.com/EOmTwUswc3
— Peter Tessier (@Teddier) December 2, 2014It was two pictures with the request to favourite one or retweet the other. The first picture was of the 'money push-up' and the second was a profile picture of Ondrej Pavelec on Tinder. One is simply a nice photo of someone looking to meet and/or hook up the other is of a guy doing a push-up with cash on his back. Both are professional athletes, both play for the Winnipeg Jets and both make a lot of money. Only one is displaying his wealth.
Why are people so concerned about Kane and yet apply no scutiny to the other aspects of social media as it appears with other Jets? There are Facebook groups with some very 'iffy' material from a variety of events/activities involving Jets yet they get no traction or attention but if Kane does he's vilified, called immature and told he needs to grow up. But if his on-ice performance was better this all becomes much more palatable?
Excuse me while I barf up on that double standard.
It's not that Pavelec is being offensive by having a Tinder profile it's that only Kane seems to be scrutinized in any form of social media yet if he was playing better it wouldn't matter. Funny because a guy who rode more pine than most hockey players with celebrity social media status was loved for his account- Biznasty- Paul Bissonette. Is it the content or is it the player? Check out the instagram BizNasty is it better or worse than Kane's?
Does it matter?
Only if you are Evander Kane and that's what should be important here not what he does but why only he takes heat, good or bad.
I'll be the first to admit that I ripped on Derek Roy during the lockout for tweeting about his Ferrari problems. I also gave Kane a pass on his 'money phone' but here's the difference between the two, at least as I see it. Kane's piles of cash are in one place, Vegas. He's not walking around Winnipeg and hitting the Shark Club casino doing the same stuff let alone the Green Room or other places. Maybe he's a better craps player than he is hockey players but he's clearly showing off his success in Vegas as opposed to his success in life which is what Roy did.
I see a difference, maybe other don't but the point still remains; Kane is not the only hockey player to flaunt via social media why are we not applying the same standard to all?
That's my problem.
Evander Kane can play for my hockey team any time. He can also take me to Vegas because he clearly has way more success there than I ever had! That's not something I criticize, in fact I admire it.
