Rangers Put Stamp On Devils' Disappointing Season (Devils)

The Devils hosted the Rangers in their 2014-15 home finale, looking to avoid a season sweep, and prevent them from winning the Presidents' Trophy in the process.

They weren't able to do that, as New York jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st period, and dominated the Devils for 60 minutes en route to a convincing 4-2 win.

Some thoughts:

1) If you could only choose one game to summarize the Devils' 2014-15 season, last night's loss to New York would be it. The Devils allowed 40 shots, generated just 21, and were outplayed significantly by their biggest rival. The Rangers were able to sweep the season series for the first time in over 20 years, and they clinched the Presidents' Trophy in New Jersey while doing so. That has to sting.

2) With New Jersey suffering their eighth loss in 10 games, the Devils will go into the draft lottery with the 6th overall pick. If they can grab a core piece there, which they certainly should be able to do, it will help make this losing season worthwhile. They can't afford to miss with this pick.

3) Reid Boucher had three shot attempts and was a 61% possession player at even-strength in last night's loss. He drew a penalty, too, and made a few nice defensive plays while logging a hair over 11 minutes of ice. With his release, I think it'd be smart to give him some power play time. He'd have more time/space to get his shot off, which should be an intriguing option for a team that can't score.

4) There were very few positives in New Jersey's loss to New York, but this power play goal was one of them. Beautiful puck movement.
