Despite recording 12 points in 15 games since being acquired by the Florida Panthers, it would seem Jaromir Jagr will not have the opportunity to chase a Stanley Cup this season.
While the Panthers would have been long shots regardless, it would have been nice to at least be given a chance. Due to a variety of misfortunes going against the Panthers of late, they've slipped out of the race.
They're not mathematically eliminated, but they're six points back of Boston for the final wild card spot with just five games remaining. Realistically they'd need to win all five - including games against Tampa Bay and Montreal - and get help to have any shot of catching the Bruins, and they still have to pass Ottawa, too. That's a tall order with so little time remaining.
The good news for the Devils is, well, the Panthers are unlikely to make the playoffs. The Devils acquired Florida's 2nd round pick in the Jagr trade, so the lower the Panthers finish the better.
As of right now the Panthers would be picking 12th overall, which means the Devils would own 6th overall, 36th overall, and 42nd overall if things hold up the way they are now.
This is a very good draft class - particularly in the top two rounds - so the Devils will be given a good opportunity to restock the cupboards here.
Prospect Updates
- The Barrie Colts went into Belleville on Wednesday night and stole a win from the Bulls - they were outshot 43-28 - in overtime to take a commanding 3-0 series lead. Who scored the winner? Joseph Blandisi, of course. He has three goals and three assists in the series.
- Out west 2014 1st rounder John Quenneville showed off similar heroics, scoring the game-winning-goal in double overtime to kick the Edmonton Oil Kings out of the playoffs. Quenneville had three goals and three assists in the five-game series.
- On the receiving end of Quenneville's winner was Brandon Baddock, whose season is now over. Baddock recorded just one assist in the series after tallying 40 points in 71 games this season. He'll either play in Albany next season or will head back to Edmonton for an overage season in the WHL.
