Flyers Shut Out by Sharks, 3-0
The Philadelphia Flyers were shut out by the San Jose Sharks, 3-0, at the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday evening.
The first period was scoreless. A would-be power play goal by Joel Farabee was overturned at 7:13 of the second period on a coach's challenge for offside. San Jose took a 1-0 lead at 9:34 on an Erik Karlsson (3rd goal of the season) tally. Steven Lorentz (1st) made it 2-0 at 18:20 of the second period. A puck exchange miscue and deflection led to second goal. Nico Sturm (3rd) added an empty net goal in the latter stages of the third period.
Flyers first-line center Kevin Hayes and first-line right wing Travis Konecny were benched by John Tortorella for the duration of the third period. James van Riemsdyk exited the game late in the first period and did not return.
After the game, John Tortorella said that he had no update yet on JVR. He said that whatever he'd say to Hayes and Konecny would be kept in the room.
Felix Sandström got the start in net for the Flyers, stopping 21 of 24 shots. James Reimer recorded a 31-save shutout.
Playing with just nine forwards, the Flyers outshot the Sharks by a 17-6 margin in the third period but couldn't get make headway on the scoreboard. The Flyers had two breakaways in the game -- Scott Laughton on a second period shorthanded bid and Frost in the third period with a chance to cut the deficit to one goal.
The Flyers went 0-for-2 on the power play. The Sharks were 0-for-1.

The Flyers (4-2-0) have an off day on Monday. Practice will resume on Tuesday at the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees.

Phantoms Secure Split with Cleveland
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms earned three of four possible points this weekend in their first two home games of the season. After settling for one point against the Cleveland Monsters in a 4-3 overtime loss on Saturday, the Phantoms took a rematch with Cleveland on Sunday by a 5-4 score in a seesaw match at the PPL Center.
Lehigh Valley trailed first in the opening period but a pair of bombs by defenseman Ronnie Attard (1st and 2nd goals of the season) put the Phantoms ahead by 2-1 heading to the first intermission. The first Attard tally came at even strength and the latter was scored on the power play.
In the second period, the team scored alternating power play goals with Garrett Wilson notching one for the Phantoms sandwiched in between man advantage markers by Cleveland's Brendan Gaunce and Carson Meyer. The game went to the third period tied at 3-3.
Tyson Foerster (1st) scored a 1-on-2 goal on a nifty shot just 29 seconds into the third period to put the Phantoms ahead again, 4-3. At 5:22, the Phantoms opened a 5-3 lead as Max Willman (1st) stashed home a shorthanded goal on an Attard rebound.
Trey Fix-Wolansky narrowed the deficit back to 5-4 with just under seven minutes left in regulation. Hayden Hodgson was called for roughing with 1:59 left in the third period. The Phantoms had to withstand a 6-on-4 attack for the duration of the game but were able to hold on for the win.
Attard's three-point game (2g, 1a) paced the attack for the Phantoms, who also got a multi-point game from Willman (1g, 1a) and Wilson (1g, 1a). Alex Kile, Jordy Bellerive, Olle Lycksell, Cam York and Cal O'Reilly chipped in one assist apiece. Foerster's goal gave him his third point over the first four games of the young season.
Troy Grosenick stopped 39 of 43 shots on his net to earn the win for the Phantoms. Jet Graves denied 24 of 29 Lehigh Valley shots to take the loss.
The Phantoms (2-1-1) have a weekend three-in-three coming up after four nights off. On Friday, they'll host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The Bridgeport Islanders will come to Allentown on Saturday. The weekend concludes with a road game on Sunday against the Hershey Bears.
