The NHL has followed in the footsteps of the NBA, and many other professional leagues, by suspending the season indefinitely.
As painful as it is to lose sports, the decision was absolutely necessary. The Corona Virus is spreading like wildfire and it would be flat out ignorant to keep exposing so many people – players, coaches, refs, broadcasters, fans – in such large gatherings.
Where the NHL goes from here likely depends on the timeline. If things get under control, and the virus stops spreading like it is right now, they can perhaps resume the regular season not too far down the road.
If we’re looking at a prolonged suspension, the NHL might have to cancel the remaining regular season games and simply begin the playoffs based on the current standings.
The Calgary Flames are currently sitting 3rd in the Pacific. If the NHL were to go off raw points, they’d face the Edmonton Oilers (that’d be fun!) in the opening round.
I think the more likely scenario would be basing seeding on points percentage, in which case the Flames would hold onto Wild Card 2 and take on the St. Louis Blues.
At any rate, that’s a discussion for another day.
In the meantime, I want to try and provide as much content as I can for you all. Maybe not every day – I don’t know if that’s realistic – but I’ll do my best.
If you have any series ideas, questions, or topics you’d like to see touched on in the coming weeks (and months?) feel free to leave them in the comment section or get in touch with me on Twitter.
Thank you and be safe.
