MacK attack, D prospects impress (Tyson Jost)

Nathan MacKinnon scored two goals and added an assist Sunday in the Avalanche's 5-1 win against Minnesota at the Pepsi Center.

J.T. Compher, Rocco Grimaldi and Mikko Rantanen also scored goals, and Semyon Varlamov made 28 saves.

Tyson Barrie (seven shots, one assist, 24:28 ice time), Tyson Jost (four shots, one assist, 16:15) and Colin Wilson (one shot, one assist, 16:50) made their preseason debuts.

The competition for roster spots on defense remains pretty even. Chris Bigras, Andrei Mironov, Duncan Siemens and 2017 second-round draft pick Conor Timmins played Sunday.

He's definitely a longshot, but Timmins is making the most of this training camp. He played 15:01 against the Wild while paired with Bigras, had three shots and the first assist on Compher's goal.

"He's been great," coach Jared Bednar said. "I thought he was great again tonight. He's a young guy, he's making all the right decisions right now, does not look overwhelmed at all, looks like he belongs.

"Pretty impressive, really, for a young guy that was just drafted coming in and trying to play defense in the National Hockey League. I know we're still in exhibitions and the games ... we're going to see more and more veterans, but he's looked really good. I've been impressed."

This was the lineup:

FORWARDS Andrighetto -- MacKinnon -- Rantanen Landeskog -- Compher -- Wilson Agozzino -- Jost -- Grimaldi Shaw -- Girard -- Ranford

DEFENSE Siemens -- Barrie Mironov -- Barberio Bigras -- Timmins

GOALIES Varlamov Cannata

The Avalanche (2-2-0) have two preseason games remaining, Monday in Dallas and Thursday in Las Vegas.
