How about those Washington Capitals? They defeated the New York Islanders by a score of 5-2. They were up 2-0 by the time it was 1:03 into the game. They have swung the door wide open for the Pittsburgh Penguins playoff chances. The Penguins officially control their own destiny. If they win out over Chicago and Columbus they would finish with 94 points. The Islanders only have one game left and can max out at 93 points. This is all the Penguins could ask for. They’ll either take care of business against two bottom level teams or they will blow it. Both would be on them. This is a best case scenario whether it is deserved or not.
Additionally, the Florida Panthers lost in overtime to the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1. The Panthers can max out at 94 points and would hold any tie breakers with the Penguins. Another win by the Panthers and they are in the playoffs. They’ll have a potential big hurdle awaiting them in the Carolina Hurricanes. I say potential because it is not out of the question for the Hurricanes to be resting players. Especially since they lost Andrei Svechnikov to injury a few weeks back.
The Penguins will host the Chicago Blackhawks this evening at 7:30.
If you can’t get the job done here, shame on you for six weeks.
