Husso shuts the door, Wings pull off another win, 4-1 over Leafs (Ville Husso)

Game Summary: Husso really kept this one alive. Toronto had 33 shots to Detroit’s 23 and only had one goal to show for it. A bit of a sour taste for the Maple Leaf faithful who always make a good showing in Detroit as a goal just 50 seconds into the game was waived off due to “kicking violation….

In truth, Toronto was without Matthews and coming in on a back to back after a tight contest against Nashville. Though Detroit put together a better effort than against Winnipeg, there were plenty of opportunities that were a bounce away for Toronto take this one.

Walman continues to impress. His skating just seems so much more fluid as the year marches on. Larkin is skating well, Bertuzzi is bringing some energy back to the line with the captain and Raymond who seems to be coming on more and more.

The shame of it all, I had to listen to the game. I have ESPN plus, the local sports pack with Bally and 2 other stations that occasionally carry games. Like many of you, we had to make some cuts. Tonight, the cuts to the cable bill had me living back in the radio days. Thank God for Game Center and highlight reels! Ken and Paul are a fantastic broadcast team, and I forgot how much I enjoyed listening to them. It was a nice change of pace.

As the squad gets back some of the bodies, Berggren and Veleno are still doing their level best to stay off of West bound 96. Berggren has really come around as a center. Copp is finding his place more and more and the team looked (sounded) to have much more consistent structure.

On the average night, if Toronto outshoots you by 10 like that, you may have a very different game on your hands. The Toronto squad fired 17 shots in the third period alone. Husso seemed to return to some of that early season form that saw Ned tracking faceoffs.

Detroit even won the special teams battle. Going 2 for 5 on the power play and killing all 3 Toronto opportunities. It was a good night for the boys in red, and a lively crowd going back and forth. Detroit has the opportunity to keep rolling as CBJ is right around the corner sitting at the bottom of the conference with just 26 points in 41 games while Detroit has 43 in 40.

Detroit’s -10 goal differential is concerning, but the improvement is working its way in. Only 2 teams sit outside the playoffs with positive differentials. NYI at +14 and Buffalo at +15. The Wings are turning a corner with some of the young and newly acquired talent finding their place in the league. The goal, in part, has to be to get that differential in the green.

First Period Detroit goals:

At 8:48 Raymond sniped his 12th of the season off of a nice pass and some fantastic skating and a takeaway by Larkin

Shots : 9-8 Detroit Score: 1-0 Detroit

Second Period Detroit goals:

Early in the second period Detroit had a pair of power plays (overlapping). Near the end of the second power play Fabbri scores with assists by Berggren and Kubalik. A nice “tic-tac-goal…Scored at 3:49

Leafs cuts lead in half at 6:18 2-1

Shots:16-15 TOR Score:2-1 DET

Third Period Detroit goals:

With about 2 minutes left, Detroit iced the puck and Toronto pulled their net minder. So far it looks like it’s Bertuzzi’s empty net tally from Larkin and Chiarot after a very important faceoff win. 3-1 Detroit. Goal changed to Chiarot with Raymond getting an assist.

With 1:11 left Nylander found himself in the penalty box as Detroit looked to close the game out. Detroit made good on the advantage as Seider scored, Walman and Raymond with the assists 4-1

Shots: 32-18 Leafs Score: 4-1 Detroit
