The Calgary Flames have signed head coach Darryl Sutter to a multi-year extension.
Sutter's career record as the Flames head coach sits at (172–109–15–26), the second most wins in franchise history behind Bob Johnson (193 wins). Darryl will certainly pass the franchise record this season.
The Flames also put Juuso Valimaki, Radim Zohorna, and Dennis Gilbert on waivers this afternoon.
There is a chance Zohorna is claimed. He had a primary assist on a Blake Coleman goal, two shots, and three hits over 19:25 of ice time in two losses to the Winnipeg Jets.
The rangy winger was on the ice for a goal for and a goal against during that time.
Jusso Valimaki is the tougher pill to swallow. The 16th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft had an excellent introduction to the NHL before sustaining a high ankle sprain in early April that season. He even got a few games on the first pairing with Mark Giordano and put up positive results.
The following offseason, he injured his ACL, which caused him to miss the 2019-20 season.
He seemed to lose his confidence by the time he returned for the 20-21 campaign.
The 24 year old’s cap hit reduces to $425,000 if he clears waivers and plays in the AHL.
Dennis Gilbert had little chance to make the team to begin with. The 6’2… 216lb defenseman should be a solid presence with the Wranglers this season. He is signed for the next two seasons at $762,500 .
