With training camps set to begin this week, many unsigned free agents are being forced to settle for professional tryouts.
The latest player to do so is Logan Shaw, who will join the Calgary Flames in hopes of playing his way into a contract.
Split between Florida, Anaheim, and Montreal, Shaw has appeared in 180 NHL games since debuting in 2015-16. He has just 31 points to show for it, which equates to 14 per 82 games.
As discouraging as Shaw's counting numbers are, his advanced stats might be even worse.
Over the last three seasons, 337 forwards have logged at least 1,500 minutes during 5v5 play. Only Lance Bouma (.64) has averaged fewer points per 60 minutes than Shaw (.74).
Shaw's on-ice impact has been horrendous as well. In each season he has posted negative relative numbers in terms of Corsi For% and Expected Goals For%. The same can be said of Goals For%, although illustrating that would have broken my graph due to such a poor 2015-16 (he posted a -24.29 Relative GF% that year).
The biggest positive with Shaw is that he almost never takes penalties. He has only 35 career PIMs in 180 games, which is a crazy low total for an energy player.
Beyond that, there really isn't much – or anything – to get excited about. He is one of the worst offensive producers in the league and he weighs his team down when he's on the ice.
He doesn't have much of a chance of making the team. At least he shouldn't.
