Calgary Flames sign Dylan Olsen to PTO (NHL)

The Calgary Flames have invited left-handed defenseman Dylan Olsen to camp on a tryout basis, according to TSN's Darren Dreger.

The 26-year-old was selected by Chicago in the 1st round of the 2009 draft but has not really lived up to the expectations that come with it.

He's tallied 22 points in 124 career games and has never played more than 44 games in a season. Since he did that in 2014-15, he's only dressed in eight NHL games with his last tour of duty coming in 2015-16 with Florida.

There is no harm in bringing Olsen in for a look -- if he shows well, great, and having the extra body around could help ensure players get rest if they need it -- but I'd be very surprised if he ended up seriously contending for a roster spot. He played in just six RHL(!) games last season and has never been anything close to a difference maker at the NHL level.

It's easier to crack the left side of the defense than the right but I feel comfortable saying guys like Brett Kulak, Oliver Kylington and, even, Juuso Valimaki enter camp with a leg up.

Nevertheless, additional competition is never a bad thing.
