The Toronto Maple Leafs retired the number of 19 players in a emotional ceremony before the season opener at Air Canada Centre in October 2016, but since then the question has been pondered who should be the next former great Leaf to have their number retired.
Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, Morgan Rielly William Nylander and John Tavares could be honored years from now if they stay with the organization long enough or win a Stanley Cup during their tenure in Toronto, but there are a few who have been retired for years that could be (and should be honored):
Leafs retired numbers 1 Turk Broda (1937-52), Johnny Bower (1959-70) 4 Hap Day (1924-37), Red Kelly (1961-67) 5 Bill Barilko (1946-51) 6 Ace Bailey (1926-33) 7 King Clancy (1931-37), Tim Horton (1950-70) 9 Ted Kennedy (1943-55; 1956-57), Charlie Conacher (1930-38) 10 Syl Apps (1937-43; 1945-48), George Armstrong (1950-69, 1970-71) 13 Mats Sundin (1994-2008) 14 Dave Keon (1960-75) 17 Wendel Clark (1985-94; 1996-98; 1999-2000) 21 Borje Salming (1973-89) 27 Frank Mahovlich (1957-68), Darryl Sittler (1970-82) 93 Doug Gilmour (1991-97; 2002-03)
The Leafs under Harold Ballard were a badly run organization that did not have much playoff success, but Vaive was not the reason for that and should be honored.
