For the first time in what felt like ages, the Bell Centre was filled to the brim last night and the crowd was in top form. The evening started with a special rendition of Imagine delivered by Ukrainian pianist Serhiy Salov and cellist Katia Brahina which was a very moving and emotional moment. The Quebecers who won Olympic medals (aside from the members of the women’s hockey team who were busy beating the USA 4-3 in OT in the rivalry rematch thanks to yet another clutch goal by Marie-Philip Poulin) were then introduced to the crowd and received a great welcome.
Speaking of welcome, the crowd was also able to welcome Joel Edmundson back in the line-up and it was fitting that he was the player who delivered the first hit of the game. While we might not have been aware of his importance for the team in the past, numerous players have spoken up lately about the impact he has both on and off the ice, but it was probably Brendan Gallagher who summed it up the best after the game:

It was a challenging year for Edmundson with a back injury that kept him out of the line-up for months and the loss of his father for whom he would have liked to score a goal. While he didn’t get on the score sheet, he put in a great performance finishing his night with a +1 rating, landing 6 bone crushing hits, taking 2 shots and being the only defenseman not to take part in the giveaway fest that occurred. He wasn’t the only bright spot on the blue line though as Alexander Romanov had himself quite a game with a goal, an assist, a +2 rating and a couple of hits. The young defenseman appears to be coming into his own more with every game and his progression has been a joy to witness of late.
While it was a fun game to watch, it was the kind of game that gives headaches to coaches, the Habs turning the puck over a whooping 29 times and the Kraken being guilty of the same sin 22 times. Each team also scored a disastrous own goal, Chris Wideman putting the puck behind Samuel Montembeault on the power play to somewhat suck out all of the momentum of the Canadiens’ fragile man advantage and give the Kraken the first goal of the game and Adam Larsson lodging a Suzuki pass behind Philip Grubauer with 2:12 to go in the final frame to send everyone to OT. The Kraken netminder was truly on top of his game last night and robbed the Canadiens of a few sure goals.

Both Grubauer and Montembeault were solid in the shootout, and it took 14 shooters before Marcus Johansson beat the Canadiens goalie to give the Kraken the extra point. With this win, the Seattle outfit extended its lead on the Canadiens at the bottom of the standing to 4 points and even overtook the Coyotes to climb to the 30th spot. The Canadiens do have 3 games in hand though and they’ll play one of those this evening in Philadelphia.

Last night, the Habs announced that Kale Clague had been placed on injured reserved and Corey Schueneman was called up from Laval. As for Joel Edmundson, he won’t be playing tonight as he’s just come back from injury and a back-to-back so soon would be unwise.
Pour ce qui semblait être la première fois depuis des lustres, le Centre Bell était rempli à capacité et la foule était en excellente forme. La soirée a débuté par une superbe interprétation d’Imagine par les musiciens ukrainiens Serhiy Salov et Katia Brahina which, un moment extrêmement émouvant. Par la suite, les olympiens québécois ayant remporté des médailles aux derniers jeux olympiques (sauf les membres de l’équipe féminine de hockey qui était occupée à vaincre à nouveau leurs rivales américaines par la marque de 4-3 avec un autre but gagnant de Marie-Philip Poulin en prolongation) ont été présenté à la foule qui les a accueillis chaleureusement.
Parlant d’accueil, la foule a également pu accueillir Joel Edmundson qui jouait hier son premier match de la saison et qui a été l’auteur de la première mise en échec percutante de la soirée, comme pour annoncer sa présence. Bien que nous n’ayons pas nécessairement été au courant de son importance pour l’équipe dans le passé, plusieurs joueurs en ont parlé en termes élogieux dernièrement ventant son impact tant sur qu’en dehors de la glace, c’est probablement Brendan Gallagher qui a le mieux résumé son importance après le match :

Edmundson a connu quelques mois difficiles avec une blessure au dos qui l’a tenu à l’écart du jeu depuis le début de la saison et la perte de son père pour qui il aurait aimé marquer hier. Bien qu’il ne se soit pas inscrit au pointage, il a offert une très bonne performance terminant sa soirée avec un différentiel de +1, appliquant 6 mises en échec, prenant 2 lancers et étant le seul défenseur du Tricolore à ne pas participer au festival du revirement qu’a été le match d’hier. Il ne fut pas le seul à tirer son épingle du jeu à la ligne bleue cependant, Alexander Romanov a connu toute une soirée avec un but, une passe, un différentiel de +2 et 2 mises en échec. Le jeune défenseur semble de plus en plus confortable dans son rôle et le voir progresser dernièrement a été une vraie joie.
Bien que le match ait été divertissant à regarder, c’était le genre de match qui donne des mots de têtes aux entraîneurs, les Canadiens ayant commis 29 revirements alors que le Kraken se rendait coupable du même crime à 22 reprises. Chaque équipe a également marqué un but dans son propre filet à des moments bien inopportuns. Chris Wideman a d’abord bien malgré lui déjoué Samuel Montembeault pendant un avantage numérique du CH qui penait déjà à générer du momentum donnant ainsi leur premier but au Kraken et Adam Larsson a quant à lui rediriger une passe de Nick Suzuki derrière son propre gardien pour envoyer tout le monde en prolongation. Philip Grubauer était vraiment au sommet de son art hier soir et a volé quelques buts certains au Canadien.

Tant Grubauer que Montembeault ont été solide pendant les tirs de barrage, il aura fallu 14 tireurs avec que Marcus Johanson n’arrive à avoir le meilleur sur le cerbère montréalais pour donner un point supplémentaire au Kraken. Avec cette victoire, l’équipe de Seattle a non seulement augmenté son avance sur le CH à 4 points au classement, mais elle s’est également hissée en 30e place, doublant les Coyotes. Les Canadiens ont toutefois 3 matchs en main et ils joueront l’un de ceux-ci ce soir à Philadelphie.

Hier soir, le CH a annoncé que Kale Clague avait été placé sur la liste des blessés et que Corey Schueneman avait été rappelé de Laval. à noter que Joel Edmundson ne sera quant à lui pan en uniforme contre les Flyers. Comme il revient tout juste d’une blessure sérieuse, il a été jugé que de jouer 2 matchs en 2 jours ne serait pas prudent.
