Chantal Machabée was the host of the session and asked some questions that had been emailed in advance before opening the floor for some live questions. Not all questions were relevant, clearly some fans have no idea how the taxi squad works, and others cannot stop talking about Covid, but there were a few interesting ones. Obviously, Geoff Molson is looking forward to having fans in the stands, but his first concern is that everyone remains healthy and he’s willing to wait as long as it takes and work hand in hand with the Public Health department.
Marc Bergevin was asked about Cole Caufield and whether it was a possibility that we may see him with the team after his college season ends in April. The GM was clear, the plan is that Caufield won’t spend much more time in college, but at this stage he cannot say where he will be assigned in April. The Canadiens are up against the cap and when they sign him for $925 000, it wouldn’t be cheap to have him on the team. He didn’t completely dismiss the idea but also mentioned that the taxi squad or the Rocket could also be possibilities.
When asked about the expansion draft, he stated that it’s too early to know what his protection list will look like, a lot of it will depend on how things unfold this season. That being said, without anyone bringing it up, he did add: “But you know how it is, you’ve seen it with Vegas, it’s always possible to make a side deal with picks to steer them towards a certain player….
One fan asked why Bergevin and Molson had been working well together for so long and Bergevin’s answer is worth mentioning: “There are plenty of teams out there that have been told to curb the spending with the current circumstances and the loss incurred because of Covid, but not us, Geoff is all in. He supports me but at the same time, he knows that I’m the one drive the bus, I’ve got both hands on the steering wheel, in a DG-owner relationship, things can go sideways if a third hand tries to meddle in and Geoff never does that…. As for Molson he said: “It’s all based on trust, when you have a good working relationship with someone, you know you can trust them and they will tell you the truth about things and not sugar coat them or tell you what you want to hear. I trust Marc, 4 years ago, when he said we needed to make big changes to win, I was on board with the plan, I trusted him. I know he’s building something here that will eventually be very good….
On the lighter side of things, it’s well known around the league that Marc Bergevin is a bit of a prankster, he was asked what the best prank he ever pulled in his playing day and he took us back to his time in Tampa Bay to answer. He said: “In Tampa there was this huge kind of bucket or very warm almost wax like liquid that players could put their hands and arms in post game to help deal with the pain and one morning, I stopped and picked up some donuts on my way to the arena. Before anyone else arrived, I dipped the donuts in that liquid and then put them next to the coffee machine…then one guy tasted one and spit it out saying eeew what is that! I told him I don’t know, try another one…and he did!… As he told this story, Bergevin was chuckling all the way through, he must have been a fun guy to have as a teammate…when you weren’t the butt of the jokes of course.
There you are, those were the highlights of the session for me. Be ready for an interesting Habs day tomorrow, it’s the home opener and the team have got plenty of activities planed for the fans, even though they will all be done virtually. The main even though, remains the home opener against the Calgary Flames at 7:00 PM.

Bien sà»r, ce ne sont pas toutes les questions qui étaient pertinentes, clairement un amateur n’avait aucune idée de la procédure liée à l’équipe de secours et d’autres ne peuvent s’empêcher de parler de la Covid, mais quelques-unes étaient tout de même intéressantes.
à‰videmment, Geoff Molson a hâte de voir les partisans de retour au Centre Bell, mais la priorité demeure la santé et la sécurité de tous. Il est prêt à attendre aussi longtemps qu’il le faudra et à collaborer étroitement avec la santé publique pour organiser le retour éventuellement. Marc Bergevin s’est fait demander quel était le plan pour Cole Caufield à la fin de la saison collégiale et s’il pouvait être possible de penser le voir dans l’uniforme du CH en fin de saison. Le DG a été clair, le plan est que Caufield ne passe pas beaucoup plus de temps à l’université, mais à ce stade-ci c’est difficile de savoir o๠il se retrouvera. Les Habs sont coincés sous le plafond salarial et quand ils le signeront pour un salaire de 925 000$, ce sera coà»teux de l’avoir dans l’alignement. Il n’a toutefois pas complétement écarté l’idée mais il a aussi évoqué les possibilités de l’équipe de secours ou du Rocket
Quand il a été questionné sur le repêchage d’expansion, il a dit qu’il était beaucoup trop tôt pour savoir qui sera sur sa liste de protection et que cela dépendrait fortement du déroulement de la saison. Toutefois, sans que personne ne le lui mentionne, il a ajouté: « Vous savez comment ça se passe, vous avez vu avec Vegas, c’est possible de faire des transactions dans les coulisses avec des choix afin d’orienter la nouvelle équipe vers un certain joueur. »
Un fan a demandé à Bergevin et Molson pourquoi ils étaient tous deux dans une relation professionnelle de longue durée qui fonctionne si bien et ça vaut la peine de vous rapporter la réponse de Bergevin: « Il y a plusieurs équipes dans la ligue qui se sont fait dire de réduire les dépenses avec la situation actuelle et les pertes encourues en raison de la Covid, mais pas nous, Geoff est prêt à y aller à fond. Il me supporte mais en même temps, il sait que c’est moi qui conduis le bus, j’ai les deux mains sur le volant, dans une relation DG-proprio, les choses peuvent mal tourner quand une troisième main tente de s’approprier le volant et Geoff ne fait jamais ça. ». Quant à Molson, il a dit: “C’est base sur la confiance, quand tu as une bonne relation de travail avec quelqu’un, tu sais qu’il va te dire les choses comme elles sont, il ne mâchera pas ses mots et ne te dira pas ce que tu veux entendre. J’ai confiance en Marc, il y a 4 ans, quand il m’a dit qu’on devait faire de gros changements pour avoir une équipe gagnante, j’étais d’accord et derrière lui, je lui ai fait confiance. Je sais qu’il bâti ici quelque chose qui sera éventuellement très bon….
Bergevin s’est également fait poser une question plus légère, à savoir qu’elle avait été son meilleur tour pendable pendant sa carrière de joueur et ils nous a ramené à l’époque o๠il jouait à Tampa Bay pour répondre: « à Tampa, il y avait un genre de grosse chaudière avec un liquide chaud et cireux dans lequel les joueurs pouvaient mettre leurs mains et leurs bras afin de les soulager de la douleur. Un matin, en chemin pour l’aréna, je me suis arrêté acheter des beignes et je les ai trempé dans ce liquide avant de les mettre à côté de la machine à café…un gars est arrivé et il en a pris un, l’a goà»té et l’a recraché en disant ouache c’est quoi ça?!?! Je lui ai dit, je sais pas, essayes en un autre peut-être… et il l’a fait! ». En racontant cette histoire, Bergevin ne pouvait s’empêcher d’en rire encore, il devait être un coéquipier agréable à côtoyer, tant que tu n’étais pas la victime de ses tours bien sà»r.
Voilà , ce sont les faits saillants de la session pour moi. Soyez prêts pour une soirée intéressante demain puisque c’est le match d’ouverture des Habs, mais la journée sera également remplie d’activités du CH, même si elles seront toutes virtuelles. L’évènement principal restera toutefois le match contre les Flames qui commencera à 7:00 PM.
