Possible Reinforcements

While Marc Bergevin has repeatedly said he wasn’t going to be active on the trade market, we’ve seen once again that the GM is an astute poker player and that he keeps his hand close to his chess. That doesn’t necessarily mean that the Habs won’t look at the Laval Rocket for some possible reinforcement. For a long time, the Canadiens’ farm team in the AHL was almost irrelevant, it kept losing and wasn’t doing much in term of player development, but things have now changed.

Since 2018, there’s a new sheriff in town, in the person of Joel Bouchard. He’s done great work so far with the Laval Rocket, he truly left his mark on Kotkaniemi last season and he’s even produced an assistant-coach for the Habs, being the one who got Alex Burrows on board. This season, the Rocket leads the Canadian division with 26 points in 18 games and a points percentage of .722.

Of course, the coach’s hard work is responsible for the team’s record but so is the players’ play and there might be a few of them who could step up sooner rather than later. In the few Rockets’ games I’ve watched, I’ve been impressed by Jesse Ylonen, Ryan Poehling, Otto Leskinen and to a lesser extent, Cale Fleury.

With Armia and Kotkaniemi sill being on the Covid list, even when the Canadiens resume their activities, I’m not sure they’ll be back. This might be an opportunity for a forward to get a chance in the NHL. One spot should go to Michael Frolik, who’s been on patiently waiting on the taxi squad since the start of the season. Which means that the Canadiens may well need a centre, at least until Staal has served his mandatory 7-day quarantine.

It might be time to give Ryan Poehling a call. When he joined the team post Covid stoppage last season, he wasn’t in top form and as a result, he wasn’t called upon in the bubble. But this season, he’s doing rather well, in fact, he has 12 points in 17 games played which is only a point short of his total from last season in 36 games. More than points though, Poehling seems more dedicated this year. He forechecks, creates turnovers and is involved physically as well. Those qualities could certainly be useful for the Canadiens.

On the wing, it’s hard not to mention Jesse Ylonen. The rookie has 14 points in 18 games and shows both great skill and speed. Most agreed that he might need some time to get used to the North American style of play after 2 and a half season with the Pori Pelicans in the top Finnish league, but so far, he seems to belong just like a fish does in water. We’ll see him with the Canadiens sooner rather than later, but maybe not this season. He’s a right winger and the Habs have plenty of those right now, it might be different next season though.

On the blue line, Ben Chiarot’s injury has showed that the Canadiens don’t have that much depth and that neither Xavier Ouellet, neither Victor Mete are the solution. Alex Romanov had a short trial run with Shea Weber, but he was deemed not ready for so much responsibility. The Canadiens’ captain has had his best seasons when he was playing with a puck moving defensemen at his side, be it Roman Josi or Ryan Sutter and there are a couple of candidates in Laval who could fit the bill. To ease the transition, Petry and Edmundson should be used as the first pairing and Shea Weber could be paired up with either Otto Leskinen or Cale Fleury on the second one.

Leskinen skates pretty well, is a good puck mover and is the top scoring defenseman with the Rocket so far this season with 12 points to his name in 18 games. He’s already improved his defensive game a lot since coming over to this side of the pond and when he was drafted, he projected as a top 4 defender. Furthermore, he’s a lefty and could therefore line-up on his strong side to complete a pairing with Weber.

The other option would be Cale Fleury, bigger than Leskinen at 6’1… and 213 lbs, he can also move the puck but has less of an offensive upside. So far this season, he has 5 assists in 14 games. He did play 41 games with the Canadiens last season but was sent down to Laval to get some experience and work with Bouchard. He’s a righty so pairing him with Weber could be a challenge.

For now then, I’d like to see Ryan Poehling to get an opportunity to show what he can do while Jesperi Kotkaniemi remains on the Covid list and before Eric Staal has served his mandatory quarantine and Otto Leskinen get another taste of the big league (he did play 5 games with the CH last year).

Someone else might be coming soon though as the Wisconsin Badgers lost to Bimiji State yesterday meaning that Cole Caufield’ season is now over. With Canada being willing to cut down the quarantine to 7 days rather than 14 for NHL trades, perhaps the same rule would apply to Cole Caufield coming over from the States, unless of course the government deems that American colleges don’t have a safe enough bubble…

Bien que Marc Bergevin ait répété abondamment qu’il n’entendait pas être actif sur le marché des échanges, nous avons pu voir encore une fois qu’il est comme un joueur de poker rusé qui garde ses cartes bien cachées. à‡a ne signifie pas toutefois que le CH ne pourrait pas se tourner vers le Rocket de Laval pour obtenir de l’aide. Pendant longtemps, le club école du CH dans la ligue Américaine était presque insignifiant, les défaites s’accumulaient et il ne faisait pas grand-chose au point de vue du développement des joueurs, mais les choses ont maintenant changé.

Bien sà»r, le bon travail de l’entraîneur est responsable du bon dossier de l’équipe, mais le rendement des joueurs l’est également et il y en a quelques-uns qui pourraient être promus plus tôt que tard. Dans les quelques matchs du Rocket que j’ai vue, j’ai été impressionnée par Jesse Ylonen, Ryan Poehling, Otto Leskinen et, dans une moindre mesure, Cale Fleury.

Avec Armia et Kotkaniemi toujours sur la liste du protocole de Covid, même lorsque le CH renouera avec l’action, je ne suis pas certaine qu’ils seront de retour. Cela pourrait être une opportunité pour un attaquant d’avoir une chance dans le circuit Bettman. Un poste devrait bien sà»r aller à  Michael Frolik qui patiente sur l’escouade de réserve depuis le début de la saison. Ce qui veut dire que le Tricolore pourrait avoir besoin d’un centre, du moins jusqu’à  ce que Staal ait servi sa quarantaine de 7 jours.

Le temps pourrait être venu de donner une chance à  Ryan Poehling. Quand il a rejoint l’équipe après l’interruption causé par la Covid, il n’était pas au sommet de sa forme et c’est pourquoi l’équipe ne l’a pas utilisé dans la bulle. Mais cette saison, il se débrouille plutôt bien, en fait, il a 12 points en 17 matchs, ce qui n’est qu’un point de moins que son total de l’an passé alors qu’il avait disputé 36 matchs. Plus important que les points toutefois est le fait que Poehling semble beaucoup plus dédié à  son jeu cette saison. Il fait de l’échec avant, il force des revirements et il s’implique également physiquement. Ces qualités pourraient certainement aider le CH.

à l’aile, c’est difficile de ne pas mentionner Jesse Ylonen. La recrue compte 14 points en 18 matchs et montre de bonnes habiletés et de la vitesse. La plupart était d’accord pour dire qu’il aurait besoin d’une période d’adaptation au jeu nord-américain après 2 saisons et demie avec les Pélicans de Pori dans la meilleure ligue de Finlande, mais à  date, il a l’air d’un poisson dans l’eau. On le verra surement avec la Sainte-Flanelle plus tôt que tard, mais peut-être pas cette saison. En effet, il est un ailier droit et le Tricolore en regorge présentement, ce sera peut-être une autre histoire la saison prochaine toutefois.

à la ligne bleue, la blessure à  Ben Chiarot a démontré que le Canadien n’a pas tant de profondeur en défense et que ni Xavier Ouellet, ni Victor Mete ne sont la solution. Alex Romanov a eu une courte audition avec Shea Weber, mais on a jugé qu’il n’était pas prêt pour tant de responsabilités.

Le capitaine des Canadiens a connu ses meilleures saisons quand il était jumelé avec un défenseur mobile qui pouvait transporter la rondelle, qu’on pense à  Roman Josi ou Ryan Sutter et il y a quelques candidats à  Laval qui pourrait répondre à  ces critères. Afin de faciliter la transition, Petry et Edmundson pourrait être utilisés comme première paire et Weber pourrait se retrouver avec Otto Leskinen ou Cale Fleury sur la deuxième.

Leskinen patine plutôt bien, il bouge bien la rondelle et il est présentement le meilleur marqueur chez les défenseurs du Rocket avec 12 points en 18 matchs. Il a déjà  amélioré son jeu défensif depuis qu’il a traversé l’océan et quand il a été repêché, il était vu comme un potentiel défenseur de top-4. De plus, il est gaucher et pourrait donc s’aligner avec Weber en jouant sur son côté fort.

L’autre option pourrait être Cale Fleury, il est plus gros que Leskinen à  6’1… et 213 lbs, il peut également bien bouger la rondelle, mais il a un moins bon instinct offensif. En 14 matchs cette saison, il a 5 points. Il a joué 41 matchs avec le CH l’an dernier, mais il avait été envoyé à  Laval pour prendre de l’expérience et travailler avec Bouchard. C’est un droitier, ce qui pourrait compliquer un duo avec le capitaine.

Donc, pour l’instant, j’aimerais voir Ryan Poehling avoir sa chance de montrer ce qu’il peut faire pendant que Jesperi Kotkaniemi reste sur la liste de Covid et que Staal complète sa quarantaine et Otto Leskinen avoir une autre chance dans la grande ligue (il avait disputé 5 matchs avec le CH la saison dernière).

Quelqu’un d’autre pourrait bien s’ajouter dans les prochaines heures puisque les Badgers du Wisconsin ont perdu face à  Bimiji State et que la saison de Cole Caufield est maintenant terminée. Avec la quarantaine coupée de moitié de 14 à  7 jours pour les transactions, on peut penser que la même règle s’appliquera à  Caufield, sauf si bien sà»r le gouvernement juge que les collèges américains n’ont pas des bulles assez étanches…
