Minor Trade (Canadiens)

The Canadiens will be back in action tonight against the Flames (puck drop at 9:00 PM) and they enjoyed a day off yesterday. There wasn’t much to report apart from a minor trade; Kent Hughes sent minor leaguer Michael McNiven to the Flames for future considerations. McNiven had been in the organization since 2015 when he was signed as a free agent after attending development camp on an invitation. Lately, he had been overtaken in the depth chart by Kevin Poulin and he might stand a fresh new start might serve him well.

Meanwhile, the Habs faithful are still waiting for the GM to make moves of significance such as moving Ben Chiarot or other veterans identified as surplus to requirement in the upcoming rebuild or for whom the offer was just too good to pass on. The deadline is on March 21, and with only 16 days to go, things should be heating up shortly.

It will be interesting to see how Martin St-Louis’ men rebound after the correction they were handed out by the Jets. Yes, they proved that they could mount a comeback by scoring 4 goals in relatively quick succession, but the issues with the penalty kill were clearly exposed. This team “enjoyed… long streaks of defeats this year and shaking off this latest one is important to keep moving in the right direction.

On the prospect front, Patrik Bexell reported yesterday that Frederik Dichow had a good game giving up 2 goals on 48 shots (both through screens) and a .958 save percentage. The goaltending prospect was picked 138th overall at the 2019 draft and he’s having a great season in the 1st division in Sweden, in 24 games he has a 2.27 GAA and a .930 save percentage. Meanwhile, the news isn’t as good for Sean Farrell. In his first game with Harvard since coming back from the Olympics, the forward suffered an upper-body injury and has missed his team’s last 4 games.

In the QJMJHL though, Joshua Roy is on absolute fire. Thanks to 12 points in 3 games, he was named the player of the week last week and he’s currently leading the way with 74 points in 38 games. The 150th pick overall of the last draft is likely to break the record for most points in a season for a Sherbrooke Phoenix player. His timing couldn’t be better to put up that kind of numbers with the Canadiens set to make more room for young talents in the coming years.

Les Canadiens renoueront avec l’action ce soir face aux Flames (mise au jeu à  9:00 PM) et ils ont profité d’une journée de congé hier. En fait, il ne s’est pas passé grand-chose hier exception faite d’un échange mineur: Kent Hughes a envoyé le gardien Michael McNiven aux Flames de Calgary en retour de considérations futures. McNiven faisait partie de l’organisation depuis 2015, lui qui avait signé un contrat après avoir participé au camp de développement du CH sur invitation. Dernièrement, il s’est fait double par Kevin Poulin dans l’organigramme de l’organisation et un nouveau départ ne lui fera pas de mal.

Pendant ce temps, les fidèles partisans des Habs attendent toujours de voir Kent Hughes réaliser des échanges plus significatifs en échangeant Ben Chariot ou un autre vétéran ne cadrant plus dans les plans de l’équipe ou pour qui l’offre aura été trop alléchante pour résister. La date limite des échanges est le 21 mars et avec seulement 16 jours à  faire, il devrait y avoir du mouvement bientôt.

Il sera intéressant de voir comment les hommes de Martin St-Louis pourront rebondir après la correction qu’ils ont encaissé face aux Jets. Oui, ils ont prouvé qu’ils pouvaient orchestrer une remontée en marquant 4 buts relativement rapide, mais les carences en désavantages numérique ont été cruellement exposées. Cette équipe est passé à  travers de longues séquences de défaites cette saison et se relever de ce dernier échec est important pour que les choses continuent d’aller dans la bonne direction.

Le gardien a été repêché 138 au total par le CH en 2019 et il connait une excellente saison en division 1 en Suède. En 24 matchs, il a une moyenne de buts alloués de 2.27 et un pourcentage d’arrêts de .930. Les nouvelles ne sont cependant pas aussi bonnes du côté de Sean Farrell. Pendant son premier match avec Harvard à  son retour des jeux olympiques, il a subi une blessure au haut du corps et il a raté les 4 matchs de son équipe depuis.
