The Los Angeles Kings announced today that they’ve signed defenseman Matt Roy to a three-year contract extension, which carries a $3.15 million AAV.

This is a good deal for the Kings, as far as I’m concerned. The term on the contract is reasonable, while $3.15 million is a good price to pay for a fairly reliable second-pairing defenseman.

Roy is third amongst Kings' defensemen in ice time, averaging over 19 minutes per game and is a key penalty killer. Roy also leads all defenders on the team in expected goals for percentage (according to NaturalStatTrick.com).

While Roy hasn’t faced a higher quality of competition than he did last year (according to Hockey Abstract), he’s averaged a bit more ice time this season and is also getting more defensive zone starts. Hopefully, Roy can keep developing and his role continues to be increased.

Overall, this is a really solid price and term for Roy’s next contract, as general manager Rob Blake is getting good value on yet another extension.
