The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in overtime tonight, picking up a 4-3 win.

The Hurricanes opened the scoring in the second period, as Nino Niederreiter got the puck back from Jesper Fast after an initial shot in-close and he put it past Laurent Brossoit. Then just a minute later, Andrei Svechnikov made a great pass to Vincent Trocheck on a rush for a tap-in, increasing the lead to 2-0. However, just before the end of the period, Nolan Patrick managed to get Vegas on the board, sliding the puck under Frederik Andersen and despite a challenge, the goal was upheld.
Carolina extended their lead once again on a power play in the third period though, as Tony DeAngelo’s point shot was deflected in by Sebastian Aho. However, the Golden Knights started to storm back and got within a goal when Shea Theodore’s shot took a deflection off Brett Howden on the way to the net and found its way in. Then with just 2:30 to go, Nicolas Hague wired a wrist shot past Andersen to tie it, sending the game to overtime.
We got a really entertaining extra frame, which involved some great back and forth chances, as well as a somewhat unexpected 3-on-3 scrum after a whistle. However, after some great saves from Frederik Andersen in overtime, Andrei Svechnikov got to a loose puck and put it out front to Sebastian Aho, who scored to win it for the Hurricanes.
The win wasn’t without flaws, as Vegas had control through a lot of the third period and Andersen had to make several great stops late in regulation, as well as in overtime. However, the Hurricanes started the game well and the effort was there throughout the night.
Martin Necas and Andrei Svechnikov both had some great moments late in the game and in overtime, creating superb chances on what were mostly individual efforts. There were obviously a lot of other great performances but they were two of the standouts offensively.
The Hurricanes’ next game comes on Thursday against the Ottawa Senators.
