The Carolina Hurricanes’ winning streak came to an end tonight, falling 4-3 in overtime to the Florida Panthers.

Florida opened the scoring on the first shot of the game, as Jonathan Huberdeau got the puck on a rush and beat Alex Lyon through the five-hole, who was making his second start of the season. The Hurricanes evened the game just a few minutes later on a power play though, as Teuvo Teravainen beat Sergei Borovsky with a nice wrist shot. After a fairly even period that some some good chances going both ways, the Panthers took the lead back on a 2-on-1 with just over two minutes to go in the frame, as Carter Verhaeghe managed to sneak a puck through Lyon.

The Panthers extended their lead early in the second period, as Verhaeghe picked up his second goal of the game, driving down the wing and putting a low shot through Lyon. However, the Hurricanes started to build back some momentum later in the frame and with under six minutes to go, Brady Skjei hammered a one-timer from the point past a screened Bobrovsky.

Then just two minutes into the third period, Seth Jarvis took a pass from Sebastian Aho and picked a corner to beat Bobrosvsky from in close to tie the game at 3-3. The Panthers generated some good chances after that but Carolina responded with some shots late in the frame, though neither team could break the tie.

In overtime, Anthony Duclair made a great play to knock down a saucer pass from Jonathan Huberdeau, then deke Lyon to secure a win for the Panthers.

Considering this was the second game of a back-to-back against two strong teams, it was a pretty decent game for the Hurricanes. They definitely gave up more odd-man rushes than usual, but perhaps we can attribute at least a portion of that to fatigue.

Alex Lyon played relatively well for the Hurricanes, especially given some of the chances he faced. Can’t complain about that performance from a third goalie.

Brady Skjei picked up another goal, marking his third game in a row with a goal, and four goals in the last three games overall. Andrei Svechnikov looked really good in both ends as well and while he didn’t get on the scoresheet, he had a strong game.

The Hurricanes will be back in action on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Flyers.
