The Carolina Hurricanes picked up a dominant 7-1 win over the Boston Bruins yesterday, taking back top spot in the NHL in points percentage.

Martin Necas was out in COVID protocol, while Ethan Bear was scratched.

The Hurricanes got on the board early, as Teuvo Teravainen took a pass from and scored before Tuukka Rask could get over in time. Then under three minutes later, Jesperi Kotkaniemi increased Carolina’s lead to 2-0, burying a puck in-close.

The Bruins did get one back on a power play, as David Pastrnak threw the puck in front and it deflected in off Patrice Bergeron’s stick. However, the Hurricanes quickly got their two-goal lead back just 13 seconds later, with Jesper Kotkaniemi tipping in a shot from Jaccob Slavin.

Then before the end of the frame, Seth Jarvis made a great play to drive around Boston’s defensemen and drive to the net to beat Rask. Just when it looked like that could be it for the frame, Jordan Martinook threw a puck in front to Derek Stepan and he converted to make it 5-1 Hurricanes after 20 minutes.

The Hurricanes couldn’t stay out of the box in the second period and as a result, the Bruins generated some great chances. However, Carolina managed to escape and despite being outshot 13-8, it remained 5-1 after the second frame.

Jaccob Slavin extended Carolina’s lead early in the third period on a power play, beating Linus Ullmark with a nice shot. Then a little later, Andrei Svechnikov got on the board as well, taking a pass from Sebastian Aho and putting it on goal before Ullmark could get up. Carolina outshot the Bruins 14-9 in the period and cruised to a 7-1 win.

This was an excellent game for the Hurricanes against a good team, as Carolina’s huge first period propelled them to the win. Despite getting into some penalty trouble in the second period, there isn’t much to complain about at all in the win.

Every forward was forechecking hard, creating turnovers and getting to pucks down low. It was a really strong effort and it was also nice to see they didn’t let their foot off the gas as the game went along.

Obviously, the Brad Marchand/Hurricanes drama is worth mentioning too. Marchand responded after Vincent Trocheck called him a rat by posting their stats side by side on social media. Then after the Hurricanes beat the Bruins and posted the Tweet above, Marchand replied with the following:

At the very least, it makes for an entertaining storyline the next time the teams meet up.

The Hurricanes’ next game comes on Friday against the New York Rangers.
