As I’ve said many times, losing at this stage doesn’t matter, in fact, it’s pretty much a good thing, the more losses, the better the odds of picking first at the upcoming draft. What does matter though is the manner in which this team is losing. Not so long ago, if the Canadiens were down 2-0 most fans were ready to tune out, but not anymore. No matter what happens on the ice, this team is playing an entertaining brand of hockey. The aim is no longer just to prevent goals, it’s to score some and I believe we’re all loving it.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a good goaltender and spectacular saves, but right now, I’m falling hard for the creativity and skill of the dynamic duo that are Caufield and Suzuki. In a 4-3 OT loss last night, they each got a goal and an assist and were the 2nd and 3rd stars of the game. Both of their goals allowed the Canadiens to come back from behind, they are rapidly becoming the leaders of this team and that bodes very well for the future.
Looking at Caufield’s numbers since the appointment of Martin St-Louis, it’s hard not to wonder what could have been if he had arrived before. Since then, Caufield is leading all rookies in scoring with 11 goals and 9 assists for 20 points, 2 more than Michael Bunting and 4 more than Matt Boldy in the same time span. For those who are already thinking “It’s easy to put up good numbers when the games don’t count anymore…, think again. We saw in last year’s playoffs that he could do it as well when it matters. A few weeks back, when Hughes was asked what a modern coach was for him, he mentioned that first and foremost a coach had to fit the identity of the team. Clearly, the decision to appoint Martin St-Louis was made on the basis that the powers that be want this team to be a speedy and attacking one. I’ve got nothing against Ducharme, but he was trying to fit a square peg in a round hole with Cole Caufield. He was smothering his players in a system that just didn’t get the best out of them and that just wasn’t sustainable.
The way Rem Pitlick is playing, I expect Hughes will want to keep him and sign him to a new deal this Summer, he fits just fine in the mold. As for Christian Dvorak, he looked pretty good out there last night, and I see no reason for the Canadiens to trade him right now. The depth at centre is seriously lacking and his value is at an all-time low. What I’m hoping when Jonathan Drouin returns is a Drouin-Dvorak-Hoffman line with Anderson back alongside Caufield and Suzuki. If St-Louis can work his magic on Drouin, that could give the Canadiens a real legitimate top-6.
I know that many of you have had enough of Drouin, but now is not the time to sell. Hughes has said it time and times again; he doesn’t want to sell low. Next year though, when Drouin is on an expiring deal, that could be the time to sell, especially if he has managed to raise his stock using St-Louis’ concepts rather than trying to fit in a system that doesn’t foster or value creativity or pure attacking skills.
This morning, Darren Dreger reports that Kent Hughes was busy on the phone last night right up to puck drop. It is believed that Arturri Lehkonen might have been the subject of those calls. While I like Lehkonen, I trust Hughes to know a good offer when he sees one and if he does move the versatile forward, I have no doubt it will make sense for the Canadiens.

Comme je l’ai déjà dit a plusieurs reprises, perdre maintenant ne change pas grand-chose, en fait, c’est une bonne chose, plus de défaites veux dire de meilleures chance de sélectionner au premier rang au prochain repêchage. Ce qui importe cependant, c’est la façon de laquelle les matchs sont perdus. Il n’y a pas si longtemps, quand les Canadiens tiraient de l’arrière 2-0, la plupart des fans étaient prêts à changer de poste, mais plus maintenant. Peu importe ce qui arrive sur la glace, cette équipe joue du hockey électrifiant. L’objectif n’est plus d’empêcher l’autre équipe de marquer, c’est de compter des buts et je crois bien que nous adorons ce virage.
Ne vous méprenez pas, j’aime voir un bon gardien a l’Å“uvre et des arrêts spectaculaires, mais présentement, je suis en train de tomber en amour pour la créativité et l’habilite du duo dynamique que forment Nick Suzuki et Cole Caufield. Dans une défaite de 4-3 en prolongation hier soir, ils ont chacun récolté un but et une passe et été nommé respectivement la 3e et la 2e étoile de la rencontre. Leurs deux buts ont permis au CH de revenir de l’arrière deux fois, ils sont rapidement en train de devenir les leaders de cette équipe et ça regarde très bien pour le futur.
En regardant les chiffres de Caufield depuis l’arrivée en poste de St-Louis, c’est difficile de ne pas se demander ce qui aurait pu arriver si le changement avait été fait avant. Depuis le 9 février, Caufield mène toutes les recrues avec 11 buts et 9 passes pour 20 points, 2 de plus que Michael Bunting et 4 de plus que Matt Boldy pendant la même période. Pour ceux qui pense déjà “c’est facile de marquer quand les matchs ne veulent plus rien dire… ravisez-vous, il a montré lors des dernières séries qu’il peut également le faire quand l’enjeu est énorme. Il y a quelques semaine, Hughes s’était fait demander ce qu’était un coach modern pour lui et il avait mentionné que d’abord et avant tout, un coach doit correspondre à l’identité de l’équipe. Clairement, la décision d’embaucher St-Louis a été prise sur la base du fait que les têtes dirigeantes entendent voir cette équipe focusser sur la vitesse et l’attaque. Je n’ai rien personnellement contre Ducharme, mais il tentait de faire passer une pièce carre dans un trou rond avec Cole Caufield. Il étouffait ses joueurs dans un system qui ne faisait pas ressortir le meilleur d’eux-mêmes et ça ne pouvait tout simplement plus durer.
De la façon dont Rem Pitlick joue, je m’attends a voir Hughes le resigner cet été, il remplit très bien le moule à partir duquel St-Louis semble vouloir modeler ses joueurs. Quant à Christian Dvorak, il s’est tres bien tire d’affaire hier soir et je ne vois aucune raison de l’échanger présentement. La profondeur au centre ressemble à la section pataugeoire d’une piscine publique et sa valeur est au plus bas. Ce que j’espère c’est de le voir réuni avec Jonathan Drouin et Mike Hoffman quand Drouin sera prêt à faire un retour pendant qu’Anderson rejoindra le duo dynamique. Si St-Louis peut faire avec Drouin ce qu’il a fait avec les autres joueurs, le CH pourrait avoir un vrai top 6 avec 2 lignes menaçantes offensivement.
Je sais, plusieurs d’entre vous en ont assez de Drouin, mais ce n’est pas le temps de vendre. Hughes a répété a plusieurs reprises, il ne veut pas vendre à rabais. L’an prochain en revanche, quand Drouin sera sur la dernière année de son contrat et qu’il aura redore son blason sous les ordres de St-Louis, ce sera le moment.
Ce matin, Darren Dreger rapportait que Kent Hughes avait été très actif au téléphone hier jusqu’au début du match. Il croit que le sujet des appels était Arturri Lehkonen. Bien que j’adore Lehkonen, j’ai confiance en Hughes et je me dis que s’il l’échange cet attaquant polyvalent ce sera que le retour en valait vraiment la peine.
