The San Jose Sharks announced yesterday that forward William Eklund has been loaned to Djurgardens of the SHL.

Eklund was selected by the Sharks with the seventh-overall pick in this year’s NHL Draft. The 19-year-old forward played in nine games with San Jose this season, managing four assists.

The decision is connected to Eklund’s contract status. Should he play a 10th NHL game this season, he would burn the first year of his entry-level contract. By sending him back to Sweden for the remainder of the year, his contract will slide and expire a year later than it would if he were to spend the season with the Sharks.
