The San Jose Sharks picked up their third win in a row tonight, defeating the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in overtime.

Adam Raska also made his debut for the Sharks, after spending 21 games with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda this season.

The Sharks had a strong first period, outshooting Detroit 12-6 and controlling a lot of the play. San Jose opened the scoring with a little over five minutes to go in the frame, as Jonathan Dahlen made a nice move to get to his backhand, then put a cross-crease pass to Timo Meier, who buried the puck into an open net, putting San Jose up 1-0.

The Sharks controlled a lot of the second period as well, generating a number of quality chances. However, the Red Wings ended up with a 5-on-3 late in the frame and while the Sharks did a great job defending it (notably Logan Couture and Erik Karlsson), Tyler Bertuzzi tipped in a pass from Filip Hronek to tie the game with just 20 seconds remaining in the frame.

The third period got off to an exciting start, with Nick Leddy making a great individual effort to skate the puck up ice and snap a shot by Adin Hill. The Sharks responded quickly though, as Jeffrey Viel drove to the net with the puck to the net and crashed into Alex Nedeljkovic, but the puck found its way in to make it a 2-2 game. The Sharks once again had good opportunities in the frame after that but couldn’t capitalize, as the game went to overtime.

In the extra frame, after a fan notably threw an octopus on the ice, Logan Couture managed to tap in a pass from Brent Burns on the goal line, giving the Sharks a 3-2 win. There was a review, but the goal stood.

It was a really strong game for the Sharks, who outplayed the Red Wings in every period, leading in shots 40-19 overall.

So the Sharks have quietly been able to string some wins together, now sitting with a 20-16-1 record. While they’re still 12th in the West in points percentage, they’re right in the playoff race midway through the year.

San Jose’s next game comes on Thursday against the New York Rangers.
