The San Jose Sharks pulled off a comeback win in Philadelphia last night, edging out the Flyers 3-2 in overtime.

Adin Hill had to be sharp in the first period, as the Flyers generated a lot of the quality chances early on. The shots at the end of the frame were only 15-13 Flyers but realistically, the Sharks were outplayed and a bit lucky to head into the intermission still scoreless.

We saw a more even second period, as the Sharks started to get some better opportunities. They managed to outshoot the Flyers 13-10 in the period but despite 51 shots total between the two sides, we still had no score through 40 minutes.

The third period was where the game picked up. James van Riemsdyk got the Flyers on the board just over a minute into the period, coming down the wing and beating Hill with a nice shot over his glove. Then a little later, Philadelphia increased their lead on a power play, as Cam York’s shot bounced off van Riemsdyk, then Mario Ferraro and in, to give the Flyers a 2-0 lead.

However, the Sharks stormed back, with Timo Meier cutting to the outside and getting a pass to Tomas Hertl in front, who redirected a puck past Martin Jones to get San Jose on the board. Then with a little over five minutes to play, Meier found Hertl in front once again and Hertl kicked the puck up to his stick and beat Jones to tie the game, sending the teams to overtime.

In the extra frame, Cam Atkinson got caught on the wrong side of the puck and the Sharks went down on a 2-on-1, with Hertl putting a puck through Jones for a natural hat trick and a Sharks win.

The Sharks completely outplayed the Flyers through the majority of the third period and deserved to tie up the game. They outshot Philadelphia 20-5 in the final frame and it was a great display from the team to battle back.

Hertl’s hat trick is the story but the majority of the lineup deserves credit for their third period performance as well, especially Timo Meier. Adin Hill was also a major factor for the Sharks in his second straight start, stopping 29 shots for San Jose.

This was a key win for the Sharks and hopefully they’re able to carry this momentum back to San Jose for their upcoming four-game homestand, which begins on Tuesday against the Detroit Red Wings.
