The Los Angeles Kings suffered a blowout loss against the Colorado Avalanche last night, falling 9-3.

The Kings were outplayed out of the gate, with Nicolas Aube-Kubel opening the scoring by throwing a puck on net and having it bounce in through Jonathan Quick. Then only 39 seconds later, Valeri Nichushkin found himself alone in front and capitalized, making it a two-goal game. Nathan MacKinnon then made it 3-0 with a one-timer on a power play later, before Aube-Kubel struck again, beating Cal Petersen (who came in to replace Quick) with a pretty rough goal, leaving the Kings down 4-0 after the first period.

Los Angeles did put together a stronger second frame, outshooting the Avalanche 16-9. Goals from Adrian Kempe and Alex Iafallo did bring the game close again, but Colorado responded with goals from Andre Burakovsky and Cale Makar, making it 6-2 at the end of the period.

Colorado only continued to build onto the lead after that with goals from MacKinnon, Nichushkin, and MacKinnon again. While Phillip Danault did score again for the Kings, it they still fell 9-3.

On one hand, the Kings were playing on the road against the NHL’s best team on the second half of a back-to-back. One the other, this is a team fighting to get into the playoffs and to have a performance like this is pretty disastrous.

That said, they also couldn’t get a save, giving up nine goals on 35 shots. Jonathan Quick wasn’t good and then some of the goals Cal Petersen allowed were brutal, even if we saw terrible turnovers from the Kings all game.

Los Angeles now has six games remaining – the Vegas Golden Knights remain three points back, but now with two games in hand. The Kings’ next game comes on Saturday against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
