The Los Angeles Kings dropped all three of their games this past week, losing home games against the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers, before falling to the Minnesota Wild on the road yesterday.

The Kings had a lead against the Flames but fell behind in the second period and couldn’t catch up, then fell to the Oilers a couple days later, losing both games by a score of 3-2. Then yesterday, the Kings had a great start but blew a three-goal lead, on route to a 6-3 loss.

The losses put Los Angeles in an interesting position, sitting third in the Pacific Division and eighth in the Western Conference in points percentage. While the Kings stumbled on their losing streak, the Vegas Golden Knights have made up a ton of ground, winning six of their last seven games.

As of now, the Kings are two points up on the Golden Knights with eight games remaining, but Vegas has a game in hand.

That said, the Kings do have a favourable schedule to wrap up the year. While five of the games do come on the road, Los Angeles will play seven of the eight games against teams currently outside the playoffs (one game against the Colorado Avalanche being the exception), with two games against both the Anaheim Ducks and Chicago Blackhawks, then matchups versus the Columbus Blue Jackets, Seattle Kraken and Vancouver Canucks as well.

Vegas, on the other hand, will play six of their nine remaining games on the road and will face current playoff teams in five games (with four of those coming on the road).

The Vancouver Canucks are pushing as well, but Vegas is certainly the most realistic threat to Los Angeles’ playoff chances. Then on the other hand, the Kings could catch the Dallas Stars (or potentially someone else) in a wildcard race even if Vegas overtook them, but they would need to make up some ground.

With so few games remaining, the Kings can’t afford to stumble and if they can’t get back on track, they’re in danger of missing the playoffs.
