The Los Angeles Kings announced yesterday that they’ve signed goaltender Cal Petersen to a three-year contract extension, worth $5 million. The extension will kick in for the 2022-23 season, as Petersen still has one year remaining on his current contract.

Petersen is 27 years old and has played NHL 54 games over the last three seasons, all coming with the Kings. This past season, Petersen posted a .911 save percentage and 2.89 goals against average in 35 games.

While ideally the contract would’ve been a year or two longer and the Kings may have slightly overpaid for a three-year deal, it’s great to see Petersen locked up a year before his contract expires. He’s expected to be the Kings’ long-term starter and this deal shows the organization’s trust in him.
