The Carolina Hurricanes announced yesterday that they have re-signed defenseman Roland McKeown to a one-year contract, worth $700,000.

McKeown is 24 years old and has spent the last four seasons with the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers. This past season, he scored 24 points in 61 AHL games and had a plus-four rating. He's also played a total of 10 NHL games.

Along with the news of the extension, the Hurricanes announced that McKeown has been loaned to a team in the SHL, Sweden’s highest professional league. He’ll likely compete for a roster spot with the Hurricanes when training camp begins and could end up as a spare on the team’s roster.

McKeown’s extension is a two-way deal, however, he will not be exempt from waivers.
