Montreal Canadiens Loan Prospect to Switzerland's National League for 2026-27 Season

50 days separates us from the start of the National Hockey League's 2026-27 campaign and there's plenty of excitement among Montreal Canadiens fans entering the new season.

Back in July, reports began circulating about the possibility of Montreal Canadiens prospect Vinzenz Rohrer heading back overseas to Europe on loan for the 2026-27 season. Prior to joining the Laval Rocket at the tail end of last season, Rohrer spent three years with Zurich in Switzerland's National League, capturing two league titles.

"According to the "Luzerner Zeitung". team manager Ted Suihkonen is trying his best to convince Vinzenz Rohrer to suit up for EV Zug this season and even visited him in Austria. However, a final decision has not yet been made by Rohrer's camp on his future. Furthermore, the Canadians will decide where their player will play next season." SwissHockeyNews.ch said in July.

Less than a month after that report, the Canadiens have officially confirmed where Vinzenz Rohrer will be suiting up for the start of the 2026-27 season, which gets underway in Europe in mid-September.

Montreal Canadiens loan prospect Vinzenz Rohrer to Switzerland's National League

On Sunday afternoon, the Montreal Canadiens announced on social media that they've loaned Vinzenz Rohrer to EV Zug for the 2026-27 campaign.

"The Canadiens have loaned forward Vinzenz Rohrer to the EV Zug in the Swiss National League for the 2026-27 season." the club said in a post on X.

At EV Zug, the Feldkirch, Austria native will join former Montreal Canadiens forward Tomas Tatar & defenseman Raphael Diaz, along with ex-NHLers Dominik Kubalik, Gregory Hofmann and Jacob Moverare. 38-year-old Leonardo Genoni, who has won three consecutive silver medals with Switzerland at the IIHF World Championship, returns for his eighth year between the pipes with EV Zug.

While EV Zug's roster looks fairly strong on paper, they do face a bit of an uphill climb if they want to take home their first National League title since 2022. According to Hockey Stakes, EV Zug have the seventh-best odds to take home the National League championship this coming season, sitting at +1500 entering the new campaign. HC Davos (+300), Rohrer's former team ZSC Lions (+425), HC Fribourg-Gotteron (+500), Geneve-Servette HC (+700), HC Lausanne (+900) and HC Lugano (+1200) all have better odds.

Vinzenz Rohrer shares excitement for fourth season in Switzerland

Shortly after the Canadiens confirmed the loan, EV Zug announced Vinzenz Rohrer's arrival in a press release on the team's website. EV Zug General Manager Ted Suihkonen believes Rohrer will play a big role this season for the club and praised his hockey IQ when discussing what the Canadiens prospect will bring to the group.

"Vinzenz can play an important role for us. He has an excellent hockey IQ and an unwavering desire to keep improving. We are very pleased to welcome him to Zug." Suihkonen shared.

Rohrer, who turns 22 on September 9th, will have a big opportunity at EV Zug and it's going to be a significant year for his development, too. I would suspect he'll get top-six minutes right out of the gate, which should allow him to produce plenty offensively, especially with potential linemates such as the aforementioned Tomas Tatar and Dominik Kubalik.

The infrastructure is excellent, and I have felt the trust of the EVZ management and coaching staff since the very first contact – something I truly appreciate." Rohrer said.

In 142 career games in Switzerland's top division, Rohrer has 56 points (26 goals, 30 assists), 44 penalty minutes and is a plus-18. He's also gone on to add 12 points (four goals, eight assists) in 40 postseason contests.

Rohrer's first game with EV Zug will come on Tuesday, September 15th as they take on HC Lausanne. Depending on how EV Zug's season goes, Canadiens fans could see Rohrer return to North America to play for the AHL's Laval Rocket in the spring, much like the 2025-26 campaign.
