Matthews signed a four-year, $53 million extension in August of 2023, carrying a $13.25M cap hit through the 2027-28 season. The contract includes a full no-movement clause, meaning Matthews completely controls his destination. Any trade would require his approval.

Michkov’s creativity, skating, and offensive instincts drew comparisons to Nikita Kucherov even before he arrived in North America, and his early NHL play has only reinforced that belief. If Toronto were ever forced to move Matthews, Michkov represents the kind of potential superstar who could soften that blow.
Beyond Michkov, Philadelphia would likely have to include another premium prospect. Porter Martone, the fifth overall pick in 2025, fits that bill. The 6-foot-2 power winger projects as a top-line forward capable of producing offense while bringing the size and net-front presence playoff teams crave.
Add significant draft capital and the Flyers would have a compelling package.

Detroit offers one of the most intriguing storylines. Firstly, Matthews has a no trade clause and will have say and what happens here. He is very close friends with Dylan Larkin.
An American superstar leading an Original Six franchise in the American heartland almost writes itself. Beyond the narrative, the Red Wings possess one of the NHL’s deepest prospect systems.
The Detroit package begins with Carter Bear, the 13th overall pick in the 2025 draft. Bear’s 40-goal WHL season showcased elite scoring instincts, while his physical edge and competitiveness evoke comparisons to Brad Marchand.
Next comes Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, the Norwegian winger drafted 15th overall in 2024. His heavy shot, strong defensive habits, and relentless motor give him legitimate top-six potential.
Defenseman Shai Buium adds a different dimension to the deal. The smooth-skating left-shot defender projects as a top-four NHL defenseman and would address an organizational need on Toronto’s blue line.
