The last two weeks have been tremendously intriguing for the Edmonton Oilers. Of course the big news is the acquisition of Tristan Jarry. The skinner saga is over and now we will see what we will see. Also some positive news for the Oilers is that they are winning more hockey games consistently and Connr McDavid is back.
The Tristan Jarry Trade
I wrote in my previous articles that the Oilers should avoid Jarry, as they may simply fall into the same issue they had with Skinner. Now it may still be the case, but so far he’s played well. Also, perhaps his style of goaltending will complement the Oilers wacky defensive system, but they have improved over the last 5-6 games.
Giving up Kulak really sucked, but they needed to move the salary, so Kulak got the short straw. I’m not convinced this was the right move, but so far it seems to be working so I hope I’m proven wrong. (which I rarely am)
Connor McDavid Is Back
For the first couple of months of the season, I noticed that Connor simply did not look happy. After a goal his reactions were always muted, he was a little less dynamic out there and overall seemed sad and frustrated.
During the last two-three weeks though we’ve seen a different McDavid. He’s using his speed again to power through the neutral zone, blow by the defenders and score amazing goals.
Also, following goals, he’s showing emotion and seems to be having fun again. He was named the NHL’s first star last week with 10 points in four games, and his pace has not lessened this week, as he has 2 goals and three assists in 2 games for 5 points. He seems energized, and the Oilers desperately need this with all of their injuries.
Playoffs
Going forward, the Oilers need to keep up this momentum as they are currently third in the Pacific Division, and need to string together some wins. If they want a good playoff seeding and home ice, they need to catch the Ducks and Vegas Knights who are both four points ahead of the Oilers with 42 points.
The Oilers next game comes tonight vs the Boston Bruins at 7PM ET.
