Former Washington Capitals great Peter Bondra's statement following Alex Ovechkin's record-breaking assist on a Nicklas Backstrom goal that put him at the number one spot on the All-Time Points list in Washington Capitals history said it all.

"It has been a thrill to watch Alex play for the Capitals during his young, illustrious career. He is an extremely talented player and I couldn't be happier for him on achieving this great milestone," said Bondra. "I extend to him my most sincere congratulations for passing my mark and becoming Washington’s franchise points leader. I wish him good luck in the rest of his career as he continues to rewrite the Capitals' history books."

And he did it in 271 few games than Bondra, too. Ovechkin now stands alone with 428 goals and 398 assists in only 691 career regular season games. Bondra, in comparison, played 961 games, scoring 472 goals and 353 assists with Washington.

“I knew right away he was the guy who would be here a long time and he would break the franchise record and everything else," said Bondra before the game tonight against Calgary.

Ovechkin has scored more points than anyone since 2005-06 years with 826 points. Crosby and Joe Thornton are next with 787 and 784 respectively.

Since 2005-06 Ovechkin has scored 428 goals, also more than anyone in the league.

Say what you will about Alex Ovechkin, but the man can put up points faster than Crosby can whine to the refs.

More on tonight's game later, but right now let's celebrate Ovechkin's achievement.

More to come...
