A Fans In-Game Thoughts & Experience from the Telus Wifi Zone! (calgary)

Follow Colin on Twitter! First off, I'd like to apologize to everyone for the last minute entry as I know many were expecting a game day blog, but there is a good reason which I decided to hold off!

I was approached by Telus a few weeks ago as they wanted to host me at a home game and to write about the game and experience in their new “wifi zone…. Unfortunately I could not attend the game and accept their request, however I felt that it would be a good idea for a blog to have one of my avid readers, and your discussion board referee take my place!

While my blogs and analysis is good (it’s good right?), I thought a live, in arena experience from a fan would be interesting too!

That being said, the below is what Jason had to offer, hope you enjoy!

Last night I had the privilege of attending the Flames/Coyotes game courtesy of our friends at Telus. Honestly, they wanted Colin but he couldn’t make the game, so he graciously suggested to Telus that I might be a suitable replacement. I’m very thankful for the experience, and want to extend my gratitude to the team at Telus, and also to Colin for thinking of me.

The night was spectacular from start to finish. Telus treated us to an unbelievable meal at the Saddleroom grill before the game and the reps helped us to connect to the newly installed Telus wifi at the Dome. To my surprise, the wifi is available to everyone regardless of your cell phone carrier so I was able to easily connect even though I’m not currently a Telus customer.

Being connected at the Dome was great. I was able to tweet my thoughts throughout the game, check in on the gameday thread over on Reddit, and keep an eye on my fantasy team during the intermissions.

The game itself consumed the majority of my attention though. It was fast-paced and physical, and while Jonas Hiller struggled a little more than we’ve become accustomed to, the rest of the team picked him up and carried him to victory.

Paul Byron and Sven Baertshi were dynamic together all night, and the defensive pairing of Mark Giordano and T.J. Brodie continue to absolutely assert their dominance on the ice.

After the game I was even able to capture a great little moment. Paul Byron was named the game’s first star, and clearly this is a rare occurrence, because it took Paul a couple of tries to get the stick toss into the crowd to work. As Paul returned to the Flames bench for a post-game interview, Mark Giordano skated across the ice and threw a stick of his own over the glass to a young fan just for the heck of it.

On his way back to the tunnel, the captain made sure to stop and congratulate Byron on his 2-goal performance. It was great to see Paul actually put a couple home as he’s had countless chances turned away over the past 10 games or so.

Altogether, the night was fantastic. The Telus team was incredibly welcoming and genuinely excited to have us there, the seats were amazing, and the Flames played a great game and came away with another victory. Thanks again to Colin for thinking of me. It was great to be able to represent Hockeybuzz on his behalf.
