Wherefore Art Thou, Romeo? (NHL)

Regular readers of my blog know what a debt of gratitude that I -- and a generation of officials -- owe to the late Romeo Leblanc, who passed away earlier this year. Shortly before Romeo's death, I wrote a tribute blog dedicated to him. Apart from being a damn good linesman, Romeo was an incredible human being.

I am very much looking forward to the upcoming book on my friend and colleague, entitled "Above the Crowd", written by Romeo's daughter Carole. The book will launch at the end of this month.

I chose today's blog title not only in punning reference to Shakespeare but also because the word "wherefore" means why or "for what reason." As well as I knew Romeo, no one knew him better than his family -- his greatest treasure and source of pride -- and I know I will learn more about the things that shaped my dear friend into the person and professional he became.

To celebrate the release of the book, there will be a launch party at Arthur J. Leblanc Arena (432 chemin Melanson Road in Dieppe) from 7 to 9 p.m. on July 30. Copies of the book will also be available for purchase at RomeoLeblanc.ca.

I am looking forward to getting my own copy of the book. Knowing Romeo and his family, it will be a must-read for anyone with an interest in hockey or who simply enjoys a good human interest story of passion, perseverance and principles placed above personal desires.

Paul Stewart holds the distinction of being the first U.S.-born citizen to make it to the NHL as both a player and referee. On March 15, 2003, he became the first American-born referee to officiate in 1,000 NHL games.

Today, Stewart serves as director of hockey officiating for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) at both the Division 1 and Division 3 levels.

The longtime referee heads Officiating by Stewart, a consulting, training and evaluation service for officials. Stewart also maintains a busy schedule as a public speaker, fund raiser and master-of-ceremonies for a host of private, corporate and public events. As a non-hockey venture, he is the owner of Lest We Forget.
